UTILITY HISTORY

Denton Water: city-owned since 1905

Denton has owned its water and electric utilities since 1905. Until the 1950s its water came entirely from deep artesian wells. In 1927, after Lake Dallas was built, Denton declined a contract with Dallas for storage in it. Three decades later it helped pay for the new Garza-Little Elm dam, now Lewisville Lake, in exchange for access to the water. In the 1980s the city contracted for water from Lake Ray Roberts, then under construction by the Army Corps of Engineers. Today Denton treats surface water from Lewisville Lake and Lake Ray Roberts at its own plant beside each lake.
