UTILITY HISTORYIrving water: a city that owns rights in a distant lake
Irving went far afield for water. In the 1960s the city joined the long negotiations over a reservoir on the South Sulphur River in Delta and Hopkins counties; the contract was signed on March 29, 1968, and the dam was built from 1987 to 1991. The lake, first called Cooper Reservoir, is now Jim Chapman Lake. Irving owns water rights there. Most of its water is pumped from Lake Chapman into Lewisville Lake, then treated for Irving by the City of Dallas, and some is bought directly from Dallas to supplement it.
