UTILITY HISTORY

McKinney water: a founding member of NTMWD

McKinney was one of ten cities that formed the North Texas Municipal Water District in 1951, alongside Farmersville, Forney, Garland, Mesquite, Plano, Princeton, Rockwall, Royse City and Wylie. The district's own history traces it to worry among community leaders in the early 1940s about falling groundwater supplies. By 1954 it had set up a regional water system serving about 32,000 people, and its first treatment plant opened in 1956. The district now has 13 member cities and draws on Lavon Lake, its largest source, plus Bois d'Arc Lake, Lake Texoma, Jim Chapman Lake, Lake Tawakoni and the East Fork reuse project.
