UTILITY HISTORYMesquite water: a 1923 system and a 1951 partnership
Mesquite gained a water and sewage system in 1923. In 1951 it became one of the ten original member cities of the North Texas Municipal Water District, which began running its first water treatment plant in 1956. The city's 2025 report names Lavon Lake as the primary source, supplemented by Lake Texoma, Jim Chapman Lake, Lake Tawakoni and the East Fork Raw Water Supply Project, a wetland. The district began operating that wetland project, built on 1,840 acres, in 2008. Treatment takes place at the district's facility in Wylie, which tests the lake water and the treated water every day before the city delivers it through its own mains.
