UTILITY HISTORYPlano water: a founding member of a regional district
Plano was one of ten cities that became the original members of the North Texas Municipal Water District when it was created as a special district of the state in 1951. Congress had authorized Lavon Lake in 1945, construction began in 1948, and the district's first treated-water plant began operating in 1956. Plano still buys treated surface water from the district, which takes raw water from Lavon Lake and treats it at its Wylie plant. Since March 2023 the district has also treated water from Bois d'Arc Lake at its Leonard plant, and it draws on Lake Texoma, Jim Chapman Lake, Lake Tawakoni and the East Fork reuse project.
