UTILITY HISTORYThe Colony water: from developer district to city wells
When Fox and Jacobs built The Colony, the developer set up a municipal utilities district to provide services. Today the city owns and runs the water system inside its limits. Its five wells, four in the Trinity Sands Aquifer and one in the Paluxy Aquifer, can produce up to 9 million gallons a day. The city also buys up to 7 million gallons a day of treated surface water from Dallas Water Utilities, which draws on sources including Lewisville, Ray Roberts and Grapevine lakes. A small part of Austin Ranch gets up to 4 million gallons a day from Plano, which is supplied by the North Texas Municipal Water District.
