UTILITY HISTORY

Park Cities MUD: from SMU's wells to Lake Grapevine

University Park's first water came from SMU's artesian wells. By 1924 the university could no longer afford to supply the growing neighborhood, and that August voters approved a $150,000 bond for fire protection and for water and street improvements. The city later relied on Dallas for water and sewage treatment until 1947, when the Park Cities set up their own Water Control and Improvement District; its purification plant, reservoir and pressure tank were finished in 1950. Today the Dallas County/Park Cities Municipal Utility District releases raw water from Lake Grapevine to its Regal Row treatment plant in Dallas, and the city pumps it from a station in Germany Park.
