UTILITY HISTORY

Wilmer water: from shallow wells to Dallas lakes

Water shaped Wilmer's government. During the 1929 fire, fire trucks could not pump enough water from the town's shallow wells. When Wilmer incorporated in 1945, the main goal was a public water system, but the cost held it up into the late 1940s, and the lack of water left the town with some of the highest fire insurance rates in the country. Today the City of Wilmer buys treated surface water from the City of Lancaster, which buys it from Dallas Water Utilities. Dallas draws from the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and from Ray Roberts, Lewisville, Grapevine, Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork lakes.
