UTILITY HISTORY

Wylie water: home of the regional water district

Wylie was one of the ten original member cities of the North Texas Municipal Water District, created by the state in 1951, and the district chose Wylie for its offices. Its main reservoir, Lavon Lake, lies about five miles north of town; the Corps of Engineers began building it in 1948 and started impounding water in September 1953. Wylie buys its treated water wholesale from the district, which uses Lavon Lake as its primary source and Lake Texoma and Lake Cooper as supplementary supplies. The city stores it in four underground and three elevated tanks and delivers it through 190 miles of pipe.
