Hutchins.
No hardness figure on file for Hutchins yet.

Hutchins buys all of its water, already treated, from Dallas Water Utilities, whose 2023 memorandum gives a range for its system; the city's report prints no hardness figure we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Hutchins, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

HUTCHINS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

Dallas-treated lake water in Hutchins' tanks, moderately hard to hard

Hutchins owns no plant and no well. The city's Public Works page says Hutchins contracts with Dallas Water Utilities for potable water and for wastewater treatment, and that the facilities the city itself runs to keep pressure up are its water storage tanks and distribution piping, along with the mains, valves, meters and hydrants its crews maintain. The 2024 water quality report says the same in regulatory language: the source used in 2024 was surface water purchased from the City of Dallas, system TX0570004, drawn from Dallas's six reservoirs and the Elm Fork of the Trinity. The report adds that the TCEQ assessed Dallas's source water and conducted no assessment for the Hutchins system. Dallas's December 2023 memorandum sorts the sources by plant: Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork go to East Side in Sunnyvale; Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine reach the Elm Fork and Bachman plants down the Elm Fork.

Hutchins is one of a crowd. Dallas's FY24 fact sheet counts 23 wholesale customers taking treated water, 1,208,108 people served in those customer cities, and 900 million gallons a day of treatment capacity across its three plants. All of them get the same answer on hardness, because Dallas gives only one. The 2023 memorandum says Dallas's water is hard and reports 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate for the system, a span of about 7 to 9 grains per gallon; the USGS scale defines hard as 121 to 180 mg/L, so all but the very bottom of the range sits in that class. Hutchins' report prints Dallas's 2024 regulated results, barium at 0.045 ppm, fluoride at 0.664 ppm, a highest cyanide reading of 118 ppb against a 200 ppb limit, total organic carbon up to 4.23 ppm and a highest turbidity of 0.51 NTU, but it has no hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium or alkalinity line. This page therefore prints no Hutchins figure.

The Trinity River runs past Hutchins, but the city's water is not drawn from it there; the intakes are the lakes upstream, and the water arrives already treated. What happens inside the city is storage and delivery. Water sits in the city's tanks and then moves through its mains, and the time it spends there changes chlorine residual and pressure, not hardness, which was set at the Dallas plant. A house near a tank and a house at the far end of a main get the same calcium and magnesium. Dallas's Water Delivery summary counts 30 pump stations and 23 storage tanks on Dallas's side of the meter; Hutchins' own tanks are simply the last stop on that route. Size to 9 grains, the high end of the Dallas range, and let the free water test turn that range into the number at your own tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Hutchins, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Hutchins.

Is Hutchins’ water hard?

Hutchins drinks Dallas water, and Dallas's 2023 memorandum puts its system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7 to 9 grains per gallon, moderately hard at the bottom of the range and hard above 120 on the USGS scale. Hutchins' own 2024 report prints Dallas's regulated results but no hardness figure we could read, so the free water test gives the number for your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
