HOW HARD IS LAKEWOOD’S WATER?

120 to 155 ppm. That is 7 to 9.1 grains per gallon.
The City of Dallas memorandum, December 1, 2023, gives hardness as a range, 120 to 155 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. Lakewood is a Dallas neighborhood on Dallas Water Utilities, so this is the Dallas figure.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 7 to 9.1 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At 7 to 9.1 grains per gallon, these show up across Lakewood; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 7 to 9.1 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
LAKEWOOD’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Dallas plant water with White Rock Lake for scenery, moderately hard to hard
The water in Lakewood's pipes does not come from the lake at the end of its streets. White Rock Lake sits on White Rock Creek about five miles northeast of downtown, built to hold 18,160 acre-feet over 1,254 acres at a spillway elevation of 458.1 feet; the Texas Almanac now lists it at 1,088 acres and 10,230 acre-feet. The Handbook of Texas, writing in the early 1990s, said the city operated it for a small part of its municipal needs and for cooling water at a steam-electric plant, and Dallas's 1999 water quality report listed dam and spillway improvements at the lake among that year's projects. The drinking water itself comes from the city's three plants, and the December 2023 memorandum sorts their lakes: East Side treats Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork water, and Elm Fork and Bachman treat the water that reaches them from Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine. Nothing in the 2025 report connects any of those plants to the lake in East Dallas, and nothing connects White Rock Lake to a Lakewood faucet.
Treatment takes some of the mineral out. Dallas adds lime and iron sulfate to settle solids, and its 1998 report explained that the finished water carries about 25 percent fewer dissolved minerals than the raw lake water, because the settling step carries the added chemicals and much of what was dissolved in the water out together. What remains is still hard. The memorandum gives 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate; call it 7 grains per gallon at the bottom of the range and 9 at the top, and note that on the USGS scale the hard band begins at 121, so the range is hard water in all but its lowest reading. The utility also describes its water as non-corrosive, which matters for pipes and lead but says nothing about scale: calcium and magnesium come out of hard water when it is heated whatever its corrosivity, so the kettle, the water heater and the dishwasher element still collect it. The pipes under Lakewood are part of the system the 2025 report describes: 5,091 miles of water mains, checked with non-invasive leak-detection technology on a two-year cycle, with about 40 miles replaced each year and more than 400 miles in the last ten. Dallas's infrastructure leakage index for 2025 was 6.6, which the American Water Works Association guideline the report cites places in the band it rates as superior for reliability and integrity. Behind that network the utility's chemists ran an average of 50,000 tests a month in 1999, and its water quality page today gives 40,000 to 50,000 a month. None of those tests changes the mineral content; they confirm what the lakes deliver.
For a Lakewood home the practical reading is simple. The lake you see is not the water you drink; what you drink is Dallas plant water in Dallas's own 120 to 155 range, moderately hard to hard, and the range covers every street in the neighborhood because the city reports its three plants as one system and prints no hardness figure for any one of them. The older houses here have had longer to collect scale in heaters and fixtures, but the water arriving today is the same at a 1920s address and a new one, and neither the lake's level nor the work on its dam has any bearing on what comes out of the faucet. A softener for a Lakewood house is sized at 9 grains, the top of Dallas's range, and the free water test narrows the citywide range down to the number at your own tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Lakewood, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Lakewood.
Is Lakewood’s water hard?
Yes. Lakewood's water is Dallas plant water, not White Rock Lake water, and the city's December 2023 memorandum puts it at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate: 7 to 9 grains per gallon, hard by the USGS bands at every reading above 120. For the figure at your own faucet, book the free water test.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
