UTILITY HISTORYCockrell Hill water: once a limit, now Dallas water
The Handbook of Texas says water became the key issue for Cockrell Hill's growth in its early years. Today the city buys its water from Dallas Water Utilities, which uses the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and lakes Ray Roberts, Lewisville, Grapevine, Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork. Dallas learned hard lessons about supply: during the drought of 1951 to 1957, the worst in its history, it reopened an old plant, drilled deep wells, pumped from the Red River and rationed water, then adopted a 1958 plan that produced Grapevine, Lewisville, Tawakoni and Ray Hubbard.
