COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Cockrell Hill, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

COCKRELL HILL’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

A small city on Dallas mains and Dallas lake water, no printed figure

Cockrell Hill is a water system of its own on paper, TX0570038, and a Dallas customer in practice. Its 2025 consumer confidence report states that the city purchases its water from Dallas Water Utility and lists the seven surface sources Dallas draws on, the Elm Fork and six lakes, without a well or a local plant among them. The Handbook of Texas places the city in southwest Dallas County, a mile south of Interstate 30, with 3,815 residents in the 2020 census, one of the 23 wholesale customers Dallas lists for treated water. The supplier is on another scale entirely: its FY25 fact sheet counts about 2.6 million people served in Dallas and 27 nearby communities, 5,088 miles of water main and 150.4 billion gallons of treated water delivered in the 2024 to 2025 fiscal year. Dallas's December 2023 memorandum sorts its three plants by lake, the East Side plant in Sunnyvale on Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork and the Elm Fork and Bachman plants on the Elm Fork lakes, and the Cockrell Hill report does not say which one serves the city.

The city's report prints no hardness figure. Its own pages cover source water, definitions and lead, and the Dallas data it reproduces for 2025 is printed as images, so there is no Cockrell Hill number to show. The supplier's statement is what stands in its place: Dallas's memorandum gives 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate for the Dallas system, which converts to 7 grains per gallon at the low end and 9 at the high end, hard water by the USGS definition once past 120. It is Dallas's figure and not a Cockrell Hill one, and like Dallas's own report it describes the system as a whole, with no plant or neighborhood breakdown. One more thing the supplier says shapes the expectation. Dallas uses no groundwater even though it sits above an aquifer; every drop is lake water. That rules out the soft, sodium-rich deep well water some small North Texas systems blend in, so there is no softer source in the Cockrell Hill mix to pull the number down.

For a home in Cockrell Hill the water is the same water a Dallas neighbor across the city limit drinks, hard by the supplier's own account, moving with Dallas's lake blend and the season rather than with the street. The city's job is the mains and meters inside its own limits; the mineral content was fixed at a Dallas plant miles away, and nothing the city owns adds to it or takes from it. A Cockrell Hill softener is sized for 9 grains per gallon, the top of Dallas's range, and the free water test converts that supplier range into a number for your own kitchen tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Cockrell Hill, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Cockrell Hill.

Is Cockrell Hill’s water hard?

Cockrell Hill's 2025 report prints no hardness figure, so none is shown for the city. The water is bought from Dallas Water Utilities, whose December 2023 memorandum gives 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate for the Dallas system, 7 to 9 grains per gallon and hard by the USGS scale past 120. A free water test gives Cockrell Hill's number at your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
