UTILITY HISTORYForney water: a founding NTMWD city
In 1951 Forney was one of ten original member cities of the North Texas Municipal Water District, along with neighbors such as Garland, Mesquite and Rockwall. The district's first treatment plant began operating in 1956. Forney still buys treated surface water from it; the water goes into city ground storage tanks before reaching customers. The district treats Lavon Lake water at its Wylie plants and holds rights in Lake Texoma, Jim Chapman, Lake Tawakoni and the East Fork wetland. The large lake just north of town, begun in 1964 as Forney Reservoir and later renamed Lake Ray Hubbard, was built to supply Dallas.
