200 ppm. That is 11.7 grains per gallon.
The Forney water quality report lists a total hardness of 200 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 96 to 200 ppm (5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water. Forney's 200 mg/L is the Wylie plant figure in the city's report; the district's own 2025 report lists Forney among systems that also receive Tawakoni plant water, which ran 60.0 to 249 ppm.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 11.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 11.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Forney sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 11.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
FORNEY’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Wylie plant water with a Tawakoni plant share, 200 mg/L at the top
Forney is a member city of the North Texas Municipal Water District, and its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report prints the district's Wylie Water Treatment Plants data as the city's results. The district's own 2025 report adds a detail Forney's does not: on its plant service area page it lists the City of Forney among nine systems that are also fed from the Tawakoni Water Treatment Plant, alongside Terrell, Kaufman, Crandall and Forney Lake Water Supply Corporation. That plant, which began operating in 2011, treats Lake Tawakoni water the district buys from the Sabine River Authority under contract. Forney therefore sits where two district supplies meet. It also sits beside one of the district's sources: the East Fork Raw Water Supply Project, the 1,840 acre constructed wetland on the East Fork of the Trinity that went into operation in 2008 as a water reuse project, lies in Kaufman County according to Rockwall's 2025 report, the same county as Forney.
The figure for Forney is 200, printed on page 2 of its report as the highest total hardness as calcium carbonate in 2025, with a range of 96.0 to 200. The report prints the unit as ppm and defines ppm as milligrams per liter, so 200 ppm and 200 mg/L are the same number. That is the Wylie plant's water: very hard at the top of the USGS scale, about 11.7 grains per gallon by the district's 17.12 divisor, and moderately hard, about 5.6 grains, at the 96 end. The district's 2025 report gives the Tawakoni plant its own table, and that water ran wider in 2025: total hardness 60.0 to 249 ppm, total dissolved solids 175 to 264 ppm, sodium 14.2 to 37.2 ppm and magnesium a flat 2.52 ppm, against the Wylie plant's 182 to 455 TDS and 41.9 to 88.0 sodium. Tawakoni water is lower in dissolved solids but can carry more calcium hardness at its peak, about 14.5 grains at 249 ppm, and sits at the soft end of the scale at its lowest.
For a Forney home that means the hardness at the tap depends on which plant's water is in the main that day, which the city's report does not break out. The city's figure of 200 is the Wylie number, and it is the number the site stands on, but a home receiving Tawakoni water in a high month could see more, and in a low month far less. The district's description of both supplies is the same, moderately hard reservoir water whose minerals leave spots on dishes and scale on fixtures. A softener in Forney should be sized to the top of the published range, about 12 grains per gallon or higher if your test shows it, with a metered valve to cover the swings. The free water test is the only way to know which water, and which number, your house is on.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Forney, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Forney.
Is Forney’s water hard?
Yes. Forney's 2025 report prints the Wylie plant's total hardness at 200 mg/L as the highest result, range 96.0 to 200, very hard at the top of the USGS scale and about 11.7 grains per gallon. The district says Forney can also receive Tawakoni plant water, which ran 60.0 to 249 ppm in 2025, so test your own tap.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
