UTILITY HISTORY

Grand Prairie water: two suppliers and summer wells

Grand Prairie buys all of its surface water already treated, so it has no treatment plant of its own. About 90 percent of the purchased water comes from Dallas, which treats water from the Elm Fork of the Trinity and lakes Ray Roberts, Lewisville, Grapevine, Ray Hubbard and Tawakoni. The rest comes from Fort Worth and serves the northwest part of the city, drawn from lakes Benbrook, Bridgeport, Eagle Mountain and Worth and the Cedar Creek and Richland-Chambers reservoirs. In most summers the city also turns on its own groundwater wells, each serving areas within a mile or two.
