Grand Prairie.
170 ppm. That is 9.9 grains per gallon.

The Grand Prairie water quality report lists a total hardness of 170 ppm. On the USGS hardness scale that is hard water. Grand Prairie's 170 ppm is the city's own figure from its 2025 report, which does not say whether it describes Dallas water, Fort Worth water or the city's wells.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 9.9 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 9.9 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Grand Prairie sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 9.9 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

GRAND PRAIRIE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Blended Dallas and Fort Worth lake water plus deep wells, 170 ppm, hard

Grand Prairie's 2025 water quality report describes a supply with more pieces than most. The city's water is obtained from both surface and ground sources, and the surface water is purchased already treated from four cities: Dallas, Fort Worth, Midlothian and Mansfield. The report lists each seller's sources. Dallas treats the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and lakes Grapevine, Lewisville, Ray Hubbard, Ray Roberts, Tawakoni and Fork; Dallas's December 2023 memorandum adds that Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork go to the East Side plant in Sunnyvale and the Elm Fork lakes to the Elm Fork and Bachman plants. Fort Worth's list runs to seven, among them the Clear Fork of the Trinity. Midlothian's are Joe Pool Lake, Richland Chambers and Cedar Creek; Mansfield's are Richland Chambers and Cedar Creek. The groundwater is the city's own: up to 3 wells, averaging 2,000 feet deep, pumped from the Trinity Aquifer when demand requires.

The report answers the hardness question itself, on the page headed how hard is my water: Grand Prairie's water hardness is 170 parts per million, which the report prints as 9.9 grams per gallon, meaning grains, and it calls that hard water, the kind that leaves soap scum instead of foam and scales fixtures with naturally occurring minerals. On the USGS scale, 121 to 180 mg/L is hard, so 170 sits near the top of the hard class, just under very hard. The report does not say which of the city's supplies the 170 describes, where it was sampled or when. It is higher than Dallas's own published range for Dallas water, 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate in the 2023 memorandum, and the report does not explain the difference. The Texas Water Development Board says Trinity Aquifer water is fresh but very hard in the outcrop, the zone where the formation is exposed at the surface, and that dissolved solids, sulfate and chloride increase with depth, so the 2,000-foot wells are a separate chemistry from the lake water, and the report prints no result for them.

At a Grand Prairie tap, which water you get depends on which seller's connection feeds your part of the system and on whether the wells are running, and the report does not map that for the reader. What it does give is one figure for the city, 170 ppm, and that is the number to plan around: 9.9 grains per gallon rounds to 10 for a softener setting, and a unit sized for 10 grains covers the city's own figure with a little to spare for a day when the blend runs harder. The free water test gives the exact reading at your address, which matters more here than in a one-supplier town.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Grand Prairie, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Grand Prairie.

Is Grand Prairie’s water hard?

Yes. Grand Prairie's 2025 water quality report gives the city's water hardness as 170 parts per million, 9.9 grains per gallon, and calls it hard; on the USGS scale that is near the top of the hard class. The report does not say which of the city's supplies, Dallas, Fort Worth, Midlothian, Mansfield or its Trinity Aquifer wells, the figure describes.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
