UTILITY HISTORY

Lewisville water: a city plant on its namesake lake

Lewisville's lake began as another city's reservoir. Work started in February 1928 on a dam near the village of Garza, creating Lake Dallas, which was the main municipal water source for Dallas for 31 years. The Corps of Engineers began a larger dam on November 28, 1948, started holding water on November 1, 1954, and finished in 1955; in 1957 the old Garza Dam was breached and the two lakes became one. Today Lewisville's own treatment plant pumps from Lewisville Lake, and the city also buys treated water from Dallas Water Utilities and the Upper Trinity Regional Water District.
