Lewisville.
141 ppm. That is 8.2 grains per gallon.

The Lewisville water quality report lists an average total hardness of 141 ppm. On the USGS hardness scale that is hard water.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 8.2 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 8.2 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Lewisville sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 8.2 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

LEWISVILLE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Lewisville Lake water from the city's own plant and from Dallas, hard at 141 mg/L

Of the towns around Lewisville Lake, Lewisville alone treats the lake's water itself. The federal facility list for the city system (TX0610004) shows two raw water intakes on Lewisville Lake feeding the city's surface water treatment plant, with 2 million gallon clearwells, alongside three connections carrying Dallas Water Utilities water and one carrying Upper Trinity's. From there the water moves through the Eastside, Southside, Midway and Castle Hills pump stations, each with ground storage, and up into elevated tanks on Windhaven Parkway, Moccasin Trail, South Valley Parkway, Bellaire and at Castle Hills. All three sources are reservoir water from the same river system: Dallas's Elm Fork and Bachman plants take Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine lake water, and Upper Trinity's Thomas E. Taylor plant, also in Lewisville, runs Lewisville and Ray Roberts water through ozone and chloramine.

The figure on this page, 141 mg/L of total hardness, is the average the city reports in its 2025 water quality report rather than a single sample. On the USGS scale 121 to 180 is hard, so Lewisville sits squarely in the hard band, at about 8.2 grains per gallon. It also sits inside the range Dallas published for its own system in a December 2023 memorandum, 120 to 155 mg/L, and that is what you would expect: the Dallas water entering Lewisville's mains and the water the city treats itself come out of the same lakes. Upper Trinity's 2025 report prints no hardness value, so the third source carries no number of its own, but it is the same Lewisville Lake water through a different plant. Hardness here is the calcium and magnesium the reservoir takes on from the ground it drains; it is a mineral characteristic, not a contaminant, and the reports in this chain treat it as one.

Because Lewisville blends three deliveries of the same kind of water, the variation across town is smaller than in a well-and-lake district but not zero: a Castle Hills tap served through its own pump station and 1.5 million gallon elevated tank and a tap near the Eastside station can see different proportions of Dallas and city-plant water, and the lake itself changes with rain and drought through the year. At 141 mg/L the signs listed above, white scale on fixtures, film on glassware, soap that will not lather, are the expected result rather than a fault, and they will show up in every part of the city. A softener for Lewisville should be sized for the upper part of the Dallas range, 155 mg/L, about 9 grains, rather than for the 141 average, so it keeps up in a dry summer; a free water test gives the exact grains at your tap on the day you ask.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Lewisville, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Lewisville.

Is Lewisville’s water hard?

Yes. Lewisville's 2025 report gives total hardness of 141 mg/L, which the USGS scale classes as hard, roughly 8.2 grains per gallon. The water is Lewisville Lake water from the city's own plant plus treated Dallas and Upper Trinity water from the same lakes, so most of the city sees similar hardness. The free water test gives your tap's exact grains.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
