UTILITY HISTORY

Mansfield water: from a 1917 system to East Texas lakes

Mansfield's first water supply system came in 1917, built by Milton May Farr along with the city's first electric plant. Today the city purchases surface water from the Tarrant Regional Water District, which pumps mainly from Cedar Creek and Richland-Chambers reservoirs in East Texas and from Lake Benbrook. The district completed those two eastern reservoirs in 1965 and 1987. Mansfield treats the water itself: a 1999 plant expansion replaced coal filter media with granular activated carbon, and since December 2003 the city has used chlorine dioxide to reduce iron and manganese. Its Bud Ervin plant, rated at 41.67 million gallons a day, is being expanded toward 75 million.
