HOW HARD IS MANSFIELD’S WATER?

114 ppm. That is 6.7 grains per gallon.
The Mansfield water quality report lists an average total hardness of 114 ppm. On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard water.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 6.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 6.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Mansfield sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 6.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
MANSFIELD’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Tarrant Regional lake water from the Bud Ervin plant at 114 ppm, moderately hard
Mansfield is one of the Tarrant Regional Water District's four primary wholesale customers, alongside Fort Worth, Arlington and the Trinity River Authority, and unlike most of the district's fifty-odd customers it does the whole job itself: it takes raw lake water and treats it at its own Bud Ervin plant. The district owns four lakes, Bridgeport, Cedar Creek, Eagle Mountain and Richland-Chambers, and runs more than 250 miles of pipeline to carry water from the eastern two back to Tarrant County; the city's 2025 report says the district pumps primarily from Cedar Creek and Richland-Chambers in the east and from Lake Benbrook in the west. That is reservoir water, and the district itself does no treatment for drinking, so what the Bud Ervin plant receives is the lakes' own chemistry. The city measures how much of it reaches customers: in 2025 it accounted for a loss of 79,330,151 gallons, 1.3 percent of the water it purchased, between the plant and the meters.
Mansfield's 2025 report prints hardness as calcium carbonate at 114.0 ppm, with the minimum and maximum both 114.0, a single annual result, and that is Mansfield's number. By the USGS scale 114 ppm is moderately hard, near the top of the band that ends at 120, and it works out to about 6.7 grains per gallon. The report's own question-and-answer page puts the figure in context: it says the water is neither hard nor soft but medium, normally between 90 and 120 mg/L, or about 5 to 7 grains, and it defines hardness the way a chemist does, as the calcium and magnesium in the water. The rest of the secondary table explains the profile: bicarbonate 105 ppm and total alkalinity 107, sodium 28.8, sulfate 27.2, chloride 28.6, total dissolved solids 211, and a pH that averaged 8.10 across a 7.36 to 8.59 range. That is a lake-water signature, moderate minerals carried mostly as bicarbonate, with little sodium. The report also notes that the raw water carries enough iron and manganese to stain fixtures brown or orange, which is a separate matter from hardness, though homeowners often meet the two together.
Because one plant supplies the whole city, the 114 ppm result is Mansfield's water everywhere, and what moves it is the district's blend of lakes through the year, not where in town you live. The report's normal band of 90 to 120 mg/L is the range to plan around: about 5.3 grains at the low end and 7.0 at the top. The signs at home are modest at this level, spots on glassware after the dishwasher and a film of scale on fixtures and in the water heater, which are minerals, not contamination. For a softener, size to the top of the city's band, about 7 grains, so the unit keeps up in a month when the lakes run harder, and let a metered valve regenerate less often when they ease; the free water test gives the figure at your tap on the day, and that is the number we size to.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Mansfield, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Mansfield.
Is Mansfield’s water hard?
Yes, moderately. Mansfield's 2025 report prints total hardness of 114 ppm as calcium carbonate, about 6.7 grains per gallon, which the USGS scale calls moderately hard, and the city says its water normally runs 90 to 120 mg/L, about 5 to 7 grains. The water is Tarrant Regional lake water treated at the city's Bud Ervin plant; the free water test gives the exact figure at your tap.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
