UTILITY HISTORY

Sunnyvale water: a regional district's customer

The Town of Sunnyvale's 2025 water report lists a single source: treated surface water from the North Texas Municipal Water District, received through a connection to the district's system. The district grew out of concern in the 1940s about shrinking groundwater supplies and was created by the state in 1951 with ten member cities. Its primary reservoir is Lavon Lake in Collin County, which Congress authorized in 1945. The Corps of Engineers began building the dam in January 1948 and started impounding water in September 1953. The district now also draws on Lake Texoma and Jim Chapman Lake.
