200 ppm. That is 11.7 grains per gallon.
The Town of Sunnyvale water quality report lists a total hardness of 200 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 96 to 200 ppm (5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 11.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 11.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Sunnyvale sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 11.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
SUNNYVALE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
A small town on one district connection, up to 200 ppm
Sunnyvale's 2025 Consumer Confidence Report has a single line in its source table: North Texas MWD, a consecutive connection from system TX0430044, surface water, with a link to the state's source water assessment for the town. The result tables are printed under the heading NTMWD Wylie Water Treatment Plants, 2025 water quality data, and the town's own contribution is the sampling it does inside its mains, at 121 Planters Road and at a meter box west of 471 East Fork Road, where it checks for disinfection byproducts and for lead and copper at household taps. The district counts the Town of Sunnyvale among its customer towns, alongside Fairview, Little Elm and Prosper, rather than among the member cities. In its conservation pages the report describes the town as distributing water purchased from the district, and it reports that the system lost 9.86 percent of its water in the 2025 audit, 81,519,971 gallons, a figure about pipes rather than about what is in them. The federal facility record names the one place the district's water enters: the Riverston pump station at 121 Planters Road, the same address the town samples, with a 0.5 million gallon ground tank and three service pumps rated 2,250, 2,250 and 2,300 gallons a minute, and a single 1.25 million gallon elevated tank at 402 Tower, for 3,348 connections and 8,839 people.
The figure for Sunnyvale is 200 ppm, the highest total hardness as calcium carbonate detected in 2025, printed on page 9 in a range of 96.0 to 200 ppm. Magnesium in the same table ran 6.27 to 9.44 ppm and calcium 31.2 to 61.3 ppm, the two minerals that total hardness counts. The table also gives pH at 7.3 to 8.8 and total dissolved solids at 182 to 455 ppm, and it lists iron and aluminum below the detection level, so what Sunnyvale's water carries is calcium and magnesium, not the metals that stain. The district's water quality page calls that water moderately hard on account of the minerals in Lavon Lake, and its arithmetic puts 200 ppm at about 11.7 grains per gallon and 96 ppm at about 5.6. On the USGS scale the top of Sunnyvale's range is very hard and the bottom moderately hard; the year's average is not printed, and a range should not be averaged into a single number. Sunnyvale's 2025 tap results for lead, a 90th percentile of 2.22 ppb, and copper, 0.799 ppm, were under both action levels; they are the town's own work, since the mains are the only part of the system it owns.
For a town of Sunnyvale's size on one connection, there is no blending and no second source to shift the chemistry: the water at a house on Long Creek and the water at a house near Town Hall on Collins Road are the same water, and it changes only as the district's lake blend changes through the year. The town's two-day-a-week watering schedule under its 2024 conservation plan governs how much of that water goes on lawns, not what it contains. A softener here should be sized to the 200 ppm end, about 12 grains per gallon, with a metered valve so it regenerates less often in the months the water comes in near 96. HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Sunnyvale, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Sunnyvale.
Is Sunnyvale’s water hard?
Yes. Sunnyvale's 2025 report prints the district's Wylie plant total hardness at 200 ppm as the highest result, in a range of 96.0 to 200 ppm, very hard at the top of the USGS scale and about 11.7 grains per gallon. The whole town is on one district connection, so a softener is sized to that 200 figure.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
