UTILITY HISTORY

Tioga water: a town known for its wells

Water has been part of Tioga's story from the start. In 1884 a blacksmith, Matt Rains, said the local water healed his burned hand quickly, and companies such as the Tioga Mineral Wells Company and Star Well went on to sell the mineral water to health seekers. A 1947 fire at one bathhouse shut the wells down for a time, and in the 1970s Jim and Deedie Wendover tried to bottle the water again. Today the City of Tioga supplies groundwater from the Antlers-Sand formation of the Trinity aquifer in Grayson County. Its 2025 report lists five groundwater sources, one of them plugged.
