Tioga.
No hardness figure on file for Tioga yet.

Tioga pumps its water from city wells in the Antlers sand of the Trinity aquifer, and its 2025 water quality report is a scanned image that prints no hardness figure we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Tioga, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

TIOGA’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Antlers sandstone well water, rich in sodium and bicarbonate, with no readable figure

Federal records list the City of Tioga as a groundwater system with 649 service connections serving about 938 people, with active wells on Mitchell Street, at the east pump station and east of West Main Street near Sherman Street, an inactive well at the west pump station and a plugged one. The state well index gives the depths: the city's Well 3, drilled in 1971, reaches 1,500 feet, and Well 4, drilled in 2003, reaches 1,482 feet, both in the Antlers Sand, while the town's 1936 municipal well stopped at 215 feet in the Woodbine and is no longer used. The U.S. Geological Survey's study of Grayson County's groundwater notes that the saturated Trinity sand is more than 600 feet thick about three miles east of Tioga and over 500 feet thick in a band from Tioga to Gunter, which is why deep, productive wells are possible here.

What those wells bring up is not the hard water of a North Texas lake. The Water Development Board sampled Well 3 in July 2023 and found 192 mg/L of sodium, 338 mg/L of total alkalinity and 481.5 mg/L of total dissolved solids; calcium was 0.99 mg/L and magnesium 0.3. An April 2019 sample read 179 sodium, 333 alkalinity and 462.3 dissolved solids, and a November 2004 sample from Well 4 read 198 sodium and 513 dissolved solids. The Geological Survey's county report describes the same thing in words: the Trinity group in Grayson County generally yields soft water with a high sodium bicarbonate content, and of 35 hardness determinations it collected only 6 exceeded 60 ppm. The state's 2007 groundwater study for the region says Trinity water is harder on the outcrop and softer downdip, with more dissolved solids. Tioga's own 2025 report is a scanned image whose tables could not be read in full, and no printed hardness result for the city has been found, so this page gives none.

At a Tioga tap the minerals are there, as the dissolved-solids figures show, but they are mostly sodium and bicarbonate rather than the calcium and magnesium that scale a water heater. Which well is running, and whether the city blends them, can shift sodium and alkalinity between the Well 3 and Well 4 readings above, and the town's wells have been sampled by the state often enough to show that the chemistry holds steady from one decade to the next. A conventional softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for more sodium, so where the state's well samples show close to 200 mg/L of sodium already, the decision should rest on a measured hardness, not an assumption. The free water test measures it at your tap, and a softener, if one is warranted, is sized to that result rather than to what the aquifer is said to be.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Tioga, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Tioga.

Is Tioga’s water hard?

Tioga's 2025 report is a scanned image with no hardness figure we could read, so we state none. The city's wells draw from the Antlers sand of the Trinity, which the U.S. Geological Survey describes as generally soft and high in sodium bicarbonate in Grayson County. A free water test at your kitchen tap gives the figure.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
