HOW HARD IS ANNA’S WATER?

No hardness figure on file for Anna yet.
Anna blends its own deep well water with North Texas Municipal Water District lake water delivered through the Greater Texoma Utility Authority; the city's report prints no hardness figure we could read.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What each grain per gallon looks like at home.
With no figure for Anna, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
ANNA’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Deep city wells blended with district lake water, no single figure
Anna's 2025 water quality report is built around a split supply: one table of results headed groundwater sources, a separate run of tables headed surface water source, North Texas Municipal Water District. The surface water travels the Greater Texoma Utility Authority line that, as the Melissa and Van Alstyne reports describe it, carries district water from a single connection point to Melissa, Anna, Van Alstyne and Howe. Anna's report says the treated supply goes through sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, and its district tables include bromate at 2.5 ppb, the by-product of ozone disinfection, which marks the water as having come through the district's ozonated plants. The district's own process pages fill in the rest: ferric sulfate to gather fine particles, settling, ozone as the first disinfectant, dual-media filtration, then ammonia to form chloramine for the journey north. The city's wells feed the same mains, and the report lists their results separately.
Anna's report prints no hardness, sodium, alkalinity or dissolved solids figure for either source, which is why this page shows no number for the city. What the groundwater table does show is the kind of result deep wells give: fluoride at 1.83 ppm at its highest on a range of 0.0 to 1.83, with the city's fluoride notice putting the system at 1.55 mg/L, plus barium at 0.046 ppm and combined radium at 1.5 pCi/L from a 2018 sample. Van Alstyne, which pumps Woodbine and Trinity wells 1500 to 2500 feet deep and sits on the same GTUA line, tells its residents in its own report that its groundwater is naturally very soft and that the purchased surface water carries higher mineral levels and is considered harder. The district's own word for its treated water is moderately hard, which it attributes to Lavon Lake's minerals, and the cities beside Anna that print the district's numbers show 96.0 to 200 ppm from the Wylie plant and 96.0 to 144 ppm from the Leonard plant in 2025, a moderately hard to very hard span. Those are their figures for the district's water, not Anna's.
At an Anna tap, then, hardness depends on which water is in the main that day: well water, lake water, or the blend of the two, and the share can shift with demand and with the season. A home near a well site and a home at the far end of the district line can see different water in the same week, and no single figure would be honest for the whole city, so we will not guess Anna's number. A softener in Anna is sized for the harder of its two waters, the district supply at the top of its range, about 12 grains per gallon, and set to regenerate on metered use so it rests on the days the wells carry the load. The free water test tells you what your own tap held on the day we ran it, in ppm and grains per gallon, and that is the figure we size to.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Anna, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Anna.
Is Anna’s water hard?
Anna has no single answer. The city's 2025 report prints no hardness figure for its well water or for the district lake water it blends in, so this page shows none. The supplier calls its treated water moderately hard, neighboring cities print 96.0 to 200 ppm for it, and Van Alstyne describes the same kind of deep well water as very soft. The free water test gives your tap's number.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
