Argyle.
76.8 ppm. That is 4.5 grains per gallon.

The Argyle Water Supply Corporation 2025 water quality report lists an average total hardness of 76.8 ppm. On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard water.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 4.5 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 4.5 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Argyle sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 4.5 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

ARGYLE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Trinity wells and Upper Trinity lake water, moderately hard at 76.8 mg/L

Argyle Water Supply Corporation runs two kinds of source side by side, and its 2025 water quality report names them. Seven active wells are listed, each called after the road it stands on: Old Justin Road, Harpole Road, Country Club Road, Fincher Road, Hwy 407, the Old Taylor Road well at Knob Hill, and Frenchtown Road. EPA's SDWIS facility records for system TX0610019 fill in the hardware around the wells: ten storage tanks, from a 0.04 million gallon tank on Old Justin Road to 0.75 million gallon tanks at the FM 407 site and on C Taylor Road; service pumps rated from 200 gallons a minute at Country Club Road to 2,400 at Frenchtown Road; and emergency interconnects with Cross Timbers WSC and the Town of Northlake. The same records put the system at 4,241 service connections and 12,720 people served. The eighth line in that table is surface water the corporation buys from the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, logged under the district's own state system number at its Lewisville address. That water is produced at the Thomas E. Taylor plant in Lewisville, which pulls from Lewisville Lake and Ray Roberts Lake and also handles the part of the Jim Chapman Lake supply that is routed into Lewisville Lake. The Taylor plant is an ozone plant, rated at 70 million gallons a day and being enlarged to 85, and it sends the water out disinfected with chloramine, a mix of chlorine and ammonia meant to hold up over a long run of pipe.

The corporation's report prints one hardness result for the system: 76.8 mg/L, measured as calcium and magnesium, as the 2025 average. On the USGS scale that is moderately hard, inside the 61 to 120 band, and it works out to about 4.5 grains per gallon. The same table shows what the number is made of: calcium at 25.2 mg/L and magnesium at only 2.9, so calcium carries nearly all of it. For context, the lake water Fort Worth delivers to the south side of Northlake ranged from 108 to 150 ppm in 2025, while the deep Trinity and Woodbine wells of Mustang Special Utility District, on the other side of the county, tested at 4.773 ppm. Argyle's figure sits between those two ends. Deep sandstone wells in Denton County tend to give soft, sodium-rich water and reservoirs give harder water, so a system that draws on both tends to land in the middle, and the corporation's 120 mg/L of sodium in the same table points the same way. Elsewhere in the report, chloramine residual averaged 2.3 ppm across the system in 2025, and the two disinfection by-product sample points, on Old Justin Road and Tudor Lane, read 4 and 20 ppb of trihalomethanes.

At the tap the mix is not fixed. Pumped well water and purchased lake water meet in the corporation's mains, and the share of each shifts with the season, with demand and with which wells and storage tanks are feeding a given pressure zone. Two homes on different sides of the system can be drinking a different blend on the same afternoon, and the same home can drift toward the lake figure in a hot summer when more purchased water is moving. The printed 76.8 is an annual average across the whole system, not a reading from one street, and a blended system's average hides the spread on either side of it. Size a softener for the top of what the system can deliver rather than for the average, or let the free water test give you the grains at your own kitchen tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Argyle, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Argyle.

Is Argyle’s water hard?

Moderately hard. Argyle Water Supply Corporation's 2025 report prints 76.8 mg/L of hardness as its system average, about 4.5 grains per gallon, from a mix of Trinity Aquifer wells and Upper Trinity lake water. That is enough to spot glass and build some scale, though less than most towns on lake water alone. The free water test gives your own tap's number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
