COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Balch Springs, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

BALCH SPRINGS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

Lake Ray Hubbard water from Dallas's East Side plant, moderately hard to hard

Balch Springs' 2025 water quality report names one lake. It says the city provides treated surface water from Lake Ray Hubbard, delivered by Dallas Water Utilities, and its source water section repeats that Dallas supplies purchased surface water from Lake Ray Hubbard in Dallas County. That single name points to one side of the Dallas system. In its December 2023 memorandum to a council committee, Dallas Water Utilities said the East Side plant in Sunnyvale draws on Hubbard together with Tawakoni and Fork, whereas Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine supply the Elm Fork and Bachman plants through the Elm Fork of the Trinity. The report also notes that the TCEQ has not conducted a source water assessment for the Balch Springs system itself, since the sources belong to Dallas, and that Dallas Water Utilities holds the TCEQ's Superior rating. Dallas's 2025 report describes the system behind that rating: 5,091 miles of mains, inspected in full every two years, with about 40 miles of pipe replaced in a typical year.

Dallas publishes one hardness range for all of that water. Dallas's 2023 memorandum gives the Dallas system 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, around 7 grains per gallon at the low end and 9 at the high, and the USGS scale, which marks 121 to 180 mg/L as hard, takes in all of that range but its 120 floor, which is the top of moderately hard. The memorandum does not give a separate figure for the East Side plant or for Ray Hubbard water, so a city whose report names only that lake still gets the system range. Dallas's water quality page calls the finished water non-corrosive and lists lime and iron sulfate among the chemicals added at the plant; those are statements about how the water behaves in pipes, not about its hardness. Balch Springs' report reproduces Dallas's 2025 data, including aluminum and manganese as secondary, taste-and-appearance entries, but it has no hardness, calcium or magnesium line, and the city's own tables cover lead and copper, disinfection by-products and chlorine residual. This page therefore prints no Balch Springs figure.

For a Balch Springs homeowner the picture is simple: one supplier, one named lake, one published range. The water is finished at the Dallas plant and reaches the city with its calcium and magnesium already fixed; the city's mains and tanks change pressure and chlorine residual, not minerals. If Dallas moves water between plants on a given day, the memorandum's range still covers it, because that range is for the whole system. Lake Ray Hubbard itself is a Dallas-owned reservoir, run by the Water Production division of Dallas Water Utilities along with the three plants. Choose a softener sized for the top of the Dallas range, 9 grains per gallon, then let the free water test settle the exact figure at your own tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Balch Springs, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Balch Springs.

Is Balch Springs’ water hard?

Balch Springs drinks Dallas water, and Dallas's 2023 memorandum puts its system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7 to 9 grains per gallon, moderately hard at the bottom of the range and hard above 120 on the USGS scale. Balch Springs' 2025 report names Lake Ray Hubbard as the source but prints no hardness figure we could read, so the free water test gives your number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
