No hardness figure on file for Bear Creek Ranch yet.
Bear Creek Ranch is served by Lancaster MUD 1, which takes Dallas-treated water through Lancaster; Dallas gives a range for its system, but the district's report prints no hardness figure we could read.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What each grain per gallon looks like at home.
With no figure for Bear Creek Ranch, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
BEAR CREEK RANCH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Water from all three Dallas plants, by way of Lancaster's interconnect
Lancaster Municipal Utility District 1, the system serving Bear Creek Ranch, prints a detail in its 2025 water quality report that most Dallas customer cities leave out. Its turbidity table lists results for three surface water treatment plants by name: Bachman, with a highest single reading of 0.1 in July; East Side, 0.16 in March; and Elm Fork, 0.13 in January, each with 100 percent of samples meeting the standard. Those are Dallas Water Utilities' three plants, and Dallas's memorandum of December 2023 to a council committee says which lakes feed them: Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork at East Side in Sunnyvale, and Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine, carried down the Elm Fork of the Trinity, at Elm Fork and Bachman. The district's report describes its supply as treated surface water received over an open interconnect from Lancaster's system, and names three of Dallas's sources, Tawakoni, Ray Hubbard and the Elm Fork. The district is operated under contract by Inframark, and its board meets at noon on the third Tuesday of odd-numbered months at 6060 North Central Expressway in Dallas.
A system that may be drinking water from any of the three plants gets Dallas's system-wide hardness figure, and that is the only figure available. Dallas's December 1, 2023 memorandum gives the Dallas system 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, which converts to about 7 grains per gallon at 120 and about 9 at 155; the USGS scale puts 121 to 180 mg/L in the hard class, so the range is hard at every reading above its 120 floor, which is the top of moderately hard. The memorandum does not break hardness out by plant, and the three turbidity lines in the district's report do not tell you which plant's water reached Bear Creek Ranch on a given day, only that all three were in the mix over the year. The district's tables, which it labels as regulated at the water plant, cover nitrate, nitrate-nitrite, lead and copper, disinfection by-products and total organic carbon, but no hardness, calcium or magnesium result, so Bear Creek Ranch has no number of its own on this page.
Bear Creek Ranch is a single-district community with one connection to Lancaster, which keeps things simple at the tap. Every street in the district receives the same water on the same day, and the only thing that changes it is which Dallas plant was supplying Lancaster's side of the system when the water crossed the interconnect. The lead and copper results the district prints, 2.05 ppb lead and 0.159 ppm copper at the 90th percentile in 2023, are about household plumbing, not about the lakes. Turbidity, the one plant-by-plant number the report does give, is about clarity, not minerals. Plan a softener on the top of the Dallas range, 9 grains per gallon, and let the free water test supply the exact figure for your tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Bear Creek Ranch, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Bear Creek Ranch.
Is Bear Creek Ranch’s water hard?
Bear Creek Ranch's water is Dallas water delivered through Lancaster, and Dallas's 2023 memorandum puts its system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7 to 9 grains per gallon, moderately hard at the bottom of the range and hard above 120. Lancaster MUD 1's 2025 report prints turbidity for all three Dallas plants but no hardness figure, so the free water test gives your number.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
