HOW HARD IS BEDFORD’S WATER?

110 ppm. That is 6.4 grains per gallon.
The Bedford water quality report lists a total hardness of 110 ppm. On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard water.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 6.4 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 6.4 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Bedford sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 6.4 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
BEDFORD’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Lake Arlington water through the Murphy Drive station, 110 ppm, moderately hard
Bedford's water comes off Lake Arlington by way of the Tarrant County Water Supply Project, the Trinity River Authority system that treats that lake's water, and the authority's description of the route puts a Bedford address at its center: treated water is pumped to a pump station and storage site on Murphy Drive and from there into the contracting cities' systems. That station stands at 3521 Murphy Drive in Bedford, where the authority registered a $5,000,000 pumping and electrical improvement project in 2024, with a new 3,234 square foot building for electrical and HVAC equipment. The project has served its cities since 1974. Bedford's 2025 water quality report names the surface source as Lake Arlington and the groundwater sources as two Trinity Aquifer wells it calls Stonegate and Simpson. It also records a stretch when the water was neither: on March 11 to 13, March 20 and 21, April 10 and April 22 of 2025, Bedford drew Fort Worth water through the emergency interconnect during repairs, and repaid the water through the same connection from November 1 to 18.
The report prints the authority's own sample results for the water it sells, and the sample behind Bedford's figure was collected on February 27, 2025: total hardness as calcium carbonate 110 ppm, calcium 38 ppm, magnesium 3.68 ppm, bicarbonate 81 ppm, total alkalinity 81 ppm, total dissolved solids 194 ppm, sodium 27.5 ppm, sulfate 48.9 ppm, chloride 18.4 ppm and conductivity 342 micromhos, with pH between 7.4 and 8.8 across the year. The report traces the hardness to calcium and magnesium deposits that dissolve naturally. At 110 ppm the water is moderately hard on the USGS scale, about 6.4 grains per gallon. The report prints no separate hardness result for the Stonegate and Simpson wells that we could read, so 110 describes the lake water, and that is the great majority of what Bedford delivers.
On an ordinary day a Bedford tap carries Lake Arlington water pumped through Murphy Drive, and 110 ppm is the right expectation. Two things can move it: the wells, a small share of supply whose chemistry the report does not print, and the emergency interconnect, which in 2025 put Fort Worth water in the mains for a handful of days; Fort Worth's own published range is 108 to 150 ppm, so even then the water stayed in the same moderately hard to hard band. A single February sample also tells you one day, not twelve months, and Lake Arlington is kept full with Cedar Creek and Richland Chambers water pumped in from East Texas, so its blend moves with the seasons. For a softener, size with headroom above 110, and have the free water test fix the figure for your tap on the day it is drawn.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Bedford, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Bedford.
Is Bedford’s water hard?
Moderately so. Bedford's 2025 report prints the Trinity River Authority's sample of Lake Arlington water at 110 mg/L total hardness as calcium carbonate, about 6.4 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard on the USGS scale. The city's two wells have no printed hardness figure, so the free water test gives the number at your tap.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
