HOW HARD IS BENBROOK’S WATER?

No hardness figure on file for Benbrook yet.
Benbrook Water Authority treats Benbrook Lake water at its own plant and tops the supply up from wells, and its 2025 report prints no hardness figure we could read.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What each grain per gallon looks like at home.
With no figure for Benbrook, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
BENBROOK’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Benbrook Lake water from the authority's own plant, no published hardness figure
Benbrook filters its own lake water. The Benbrook Water Authority's 2025 report describes a conventional plant fed by an intake on Benbrook Lake: copper sulfate and chlorine dioxide go in at the raw-water pipeline, aluminum sulfate and a polymer gather fine particles into floc, a sedimentation basin settles it out, dual-media filters of silica sand and granular activated carbon polish the water, and chlorine finishes the job. The authority adds no fluoride at any step. The lake itself sits on the Clear Fork of the Trinity about ten miles southwest of Fort Worth, drains roughly 429 square miles, and held 85,648 acre-feet at its conservation pool when the Texas Water Development Board last surveyed it in 1998. It is also a reservoir the Tarrant Regional Water District uses as terminal storage, so water pumped in from Cedar Creek and Richland-Chambers in East Texas sits in the lake beside the Clear Fork's own runoff before the authority draws it.
That blend is why Benbrook's water is lake water with a mineral load, and why no single number describes it. The authority's report prints no hardness, calcium, magnesium or alkalinity results for its finished water, so this page carries no figure for Benbrook. What the report does say is telling: white scaling or hard deposits on faucets and showerheads may be caused by water with high levels of calcium carbonate, and taste in tap water usually traces to naturally occurring minerals, disinfectants or seasonal changes in the source. For context only, Fort Worth treats the same TRWD reservoir water a few miles away, and Fort Worth's 2025 report lists its own total hardness at 108 to 150 ppm, which it also states as 6 to 9 grains per gallon. That is Fort Worth's figure, not Benbrook's, but it describes the raw water both utilities start from.
The wells complicate the picture. The authority lists nine well sites in its report, most of them in the Paluxy Aquifer and two in the deeper Trinity, at pump stations on Plantation, Boston Avenue, Windward, Williams Road, Highway 377, Mendosa, Sexton Lane and Tobie Layne; Well No. 8 was plugged in 2025. Well water is only chlorinated before it enters the mains, and the state's aquifer summary says the Trinity's water is fresh, and very hard, close to the outcrop, with dissolved solids rising as wells go deeper. A house near one of those pump stations may be drinking a different mix than a house across town on the plant's side of the system, and the mix shifts with demand and season. We size a softener to the hardest water a home will actually see, and the free water test, run on your own tap, is how we find that number for a Benbrook address.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Benbrook, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Benbrook.
Is Benbrook’s water hard?
We have no published figure for Benbrook. The Benbrook Water Authority's 2025 report prints no hardness result, though it does warn that white scale on fixtures can come from calcium carbonate. The lake water it treats is the same TRWD reservoir blend Fort Worth reports at 108 to 150 ppm, and the authority's wells add Paluxy and Trinity groundwater. Only the free water test tells you what your own tap carries.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
