Caddo Mills buys treated water from the City of Greenville and from Cash Special Utility District, two suppliers with different water, and the city's own report prints no hardness figure.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Caddo Mills, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

CADDO MILLS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

Greenville and Cash SUD water, two suppliers, no city figure

Caddo Mills buys all of its water, and from two different neighbors. The city's 2025 Water Quality Report lists two interconnects, both carrying treated surface water: the Greenville line, system TX1160004, metered at 2807 Highway 66, and the Cash Special Utility District line, system TX1160018, which enters close to the interstate. Greenville's water treatment page names Caddo Mills as one of three wholesale customers, with Jacobia Water Supply Corporation and Shady Grove SUD, and describes a plant expanded to 13 million gallons a day in 1993 and 1994 that draws most of the year on the city's off-channel reservoirs north of town and turns to Lake Tawakoni as a supplemental source in dry seasons; Greenville's 2024 report puts those reservoirs as numbers 4 and 5. Cash SUD's 2025 report describes its own plant on Lake Tawakoni, treating by sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, and a second supply bought from the North Texas Municipal Water District out of Lavon Lake, which it says serves southeast Caddo Mills, Quinlan and Union Valley areas south of the interstate. So the Cash connection may carry district water, Cash's own Tawakoni water, or both.

Those suppliers print very different numbers. Cash SUD's 2025 table shows its own plant's water at 66 ppm total hardness as calcium carbonate, with no range printed, 170 ppm total dissolved solids, 27.2 ppm sodium and 49 to 79 ppm alkalinity, while the district water in the same table ran 96.0 to 200 ppm hardness, 182 to 455 ppm dissolved solids and 41.9 to 88.0 ppm sodium. On the USGS scale Cash's own 66 ppm is at the low edge of moderately hard, about 3.9 grains per gallon by the district's 17.12 divisor, while the district's 200 ppm top is very hard, about 11.7 grains. Greenville's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report prints no hardness figure for its finished water, and neither the Greenville treatment page nor Cash's report says which supplier is flowing into Caddo Mills on a given day. The district itself calls its water moderately hard on account of what Lavon Lake dissolves; Greenville and Cash treat Sabine basin water, and Greenville adds chlorine and ammonia at an average of 3.0 parts per million for disinfection.

Nowhere in Caddo Mills' own report is a hardness figure printed; its results pages cover disinfectant residual, lead and copper, disinfection byproducts and nitrate, so we show no figure for the city. What a homeowner here can take from the suppliers' numbers is that the water at a Caddo Mills tap could be the softer Tawakoni water Cash makes, the much harder district water Cash resells, or Greenville's reservoir water for which no figure is printed, and that the mix can change with the season and with which interconnect the city is drawing on. That is a wider spread than a town on a single supplier faces. A softener in Caddo Mills is sized to the highest reading your own tap shows, and a free water test is the way to get that reading, in ppm and grains per gallon, for your street.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Caddo Mills, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Caddo Mills.

Is Caddo Mills’ water hard?

We have no figure for Caddo Mills. The city buys from Greenville, whose report prints no hardness, and from Cash SUD, whose 2025 report shows its own Tawakoni plant water at 66 ppm and the district water it resells at 96.0 to 200 ppm. Caddo Mills' report prints no number, so the free water test gives yours.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
