Celina's water is Upper Trinity Regional Water District water from Lewisville and Ray Roberts lakes, treated in Lewisville; neither the district nor the city prints a hardness figure we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Celina, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

CELINA’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Upper Trinity lake water from Lewisville and Ray Roberts, no figure of its own

Celina's water is Upper Trinity Regional Water District water, and the district's own pages describe the chain. Its lake water comes from Lewisville Lake and Ray Roberts Lake under contracts with the cities of Dallas and Denton, and water from those two lakes is treated at the district's Thomas E. Taylor plant in Lewisville, a 70 million gallon a day plant that uses ozone mainly for taste and odor and also as a disinfectant. A third source, Jim Chapman Lake in northeast Texas, arrives through a pipeline the district owns jointly with the City of Irving; part of that water goes to the district's 30 million gallon a day Tom Harpool plant at Providence Village and part is released into Lewisville Lake for treatment at Taylor. From the plants, more than 103 miles of transmission pipeline run, in the district's words, from Justin to Celina and from Castle Hills to Sanger. The lakes are large: the Texas Water Development Board records Lewisville Lake, a Denton County reservoir on the Trinity's Elm Fork, at 598,902 acre-feet and 27,175 acres at conservation pool, filling since November 1, 1954, and Ray Roberts upstream at 28,646 acres, impounded from June 30, 1987.

Reservoir water of that kind carries the calcium and magnesium it gathers from the land it drains, and hardness is on Upper Trinity's list of tested parameters, but no figure for it is printed on the district's water quality page, the district's 2025 water quality report could not be read by script, and Celina's own 2025 report prints no hardness row. So this page shows no hardness figure for Celina. For scale only, the City of Dallas, which treats water from the same two lakes at its Elm Fork and Bachman plants, told a council committee in a December 2023 memorandum that its hardness ranges from 120 to 155 mg/L as CaCO3, which sits between the moderately hard and hard classes, about 7.0 to 9.1 grains per gallon. That is Dallas's figure for Dallas's treatment of Lewisville and Ray Roberts water; it is not Upper Trinity's and it is not Celina's.

Celina's supply is Upper Trinity water, so hardness across town follows the district's treated water rather than any local well, shifting with the lake blend and the season, and it may shift again when Lake Ralph Hall, now under construction on the North Sulphur River in Fannin County, begins adding 35 million gallons a day of raw water and 19 million of reused water to the district's supply, since a new source can change the mineral balance. We will not guess Celina's number ahead of the district's own figure. The free water test gives it at your faucet, and a softener sized to the top of what the test shows across a year, rather than to a single reading, is the one that keeps working.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Celina, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Celina.

Is Celina’s water hard?

No Celina figure is published that we could read. The city buys Upper Trinity Regional Water District water from Lewisville and Ray Roberts lakes, treated at the Taylor plant in Lewisville; the district lists hardness among its tests but prints no value. Dallas, treating the same lakes, states 120 to 155 mg/L. The free water test gives your number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
