Cross Roads.
4.773 ppm. That is 0.3 grains per gallon.

The Mustang SUD 2025 water quality report lists an average total hardness of 4.773 ppm, with a reported range of 3.68 to 5.48 ppm (0.2 to 0.3 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is soft water. The 4.773 ppm figure is what Mustang measures in its wells; the lake water it also pipes into Cross Roads carries no printed hardness result.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What hard water looks like at home.

At about 0.3 grains per gallon, Cross Roads’ figure is soft water, so these signs point to a harder share of the supply or to the day’s blend rather than to the figure. Three or more of them, and the free water test says what is at your tap.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of each gallon of harder water.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

CROSS ROADS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

Tested in the town's own mains: soft Mustang well water, lake water uncounted

Mustang Special Utility District tests its water inside Cross Roads. Three of the four disinfection by-product sampling points in the district's 2025 report are in town, at 101 W. Oak Shores Drive, 1801 Tipps Road and 9113 King Ranch Drive; the fourth is in Oak Point. The district's Hathaway well and its Plant 12 stand at U.S. 377 and Dr. Griffin Road in Cross Roads, with a 1 million gallon elevated tank on Dr. Griffin Road, so part of what the town drinks is pumped from directly beneath it. The remainder of the district's groundwater comes from wells spaced up the U.S. 377 corridor toward Pilot Point, and the balance of the supply is lake water bought from Upper Trinity, which can send it from either of its two plants, Taylor in Lewisville or Harpool at Providence Village. The same federal record carries two more Cross Roads entries, an active compliance sampling point at U.S. 377 and Dr. Griffin and a retired one at 7930 Highway 377, both of them on the Hathaway side of town.

The 4.773 ppm hardness figure for Cross Roads is the district's 2025 average for that groundwater, printed on page 10 of the report, where the 2025 samples ran from 3.68 up to 5.48 ppm as calcium carbonate. It is soft on the USGS scale, where soft runs up to 60, and converts to roughly 0.28 grains per gallon. An older line in the same table, hardness as calcium and magnesium measured in 2016, read 5.24 ppm with a range of 4.55 to 6.01, so the wells have tested this way for years. The page also prints sodium at 222 ppm, total alkalinity at 530 ppm and total dissolved solids at 734 ppm against a secondary limit of 1,000: water that carries a good deal of dissolved mineral, almost none of it the calcium and magnesium that leave scale in a kettle. Calcium itself is 1.22 ppm and magnesium 0.420. The report gives no hardness line for the purchased Upper Trinity water, and the wholesaler's 2025 report is silent on it too.

The three Cross Roads sampling sites exist because the district has to measure chlorination by-products where the water actually sits in the pipes, and the same logic applies to hardness: the only number that describes a Cross Roads tap is one measured at a Cross Roads tap. On a day when the wells carry the load the water is soft and a softener idles; when lake water is moving through the Dr. Griffin Road tank it is not. Dallas, which also treats Lewisville Lake water, puts its own system at 120 to 155 mg/L, call it seven to nine grains, and that is what a lake-water day can look like. Plan a softener around the top of what the free water test turns up at your tap rather than around the 4.773 average, so it is ready for the hard weeks and simply rests through the soft ones. The 2025 by-product results differ from one Cross Roads street to the next: total trihalomethanes ran a locational average of 20 ppb at Oak Shores Drive, 16 at Tipps Road and 30 at King Ranch Drive, with haloacetic acids at 11, 8 and 17 ppb against limits of 80 and 60. Those are disinfection figures, not hardness, but they show that the water in different parts of town is not identical on a given day.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Cross Roads, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Cross Roads.

Is Cross Roads’ water hard?

Mustang's wells are soft: the district's 2025 report gives 4.773 ppm, range 3.68 to 5.48, about a quarter of a grain per gallon. But Cross Roads also receives Upper Trinity lake water with no printed figure, and lake water in this basin runs far harder. The free water test at your own tap is the number to size by.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
