COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Double Oak, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

DOUBLE OAK’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Cross Timbers wells and Upper Trinity lake water, sampled in town, no hardness printed

Cross Timbers Water Supply Corporation measures its water in Double Oak: one of the two disinfection by-product sampling sites in its 2025 report is at 500 Cross Timbers Road in Double Oak, the other on Shiloh Road in Flower Mound. The report lists the corporation's wells by address, Copper Hill at 1180 Copper Hill Circle, Stonewood at 1100 E. Jeter Road, Stargate at 1250 I.T. Neely Road and Jernigan at 410 Jernigan Road, and lists the Upper Trinity surface water delivery at the Copper Hill address. The corporation's own history page gives the proportions: in the summer of 2021 the wells together produced 2.8 million gallons a day while Upper Trinity supplied 2.5 million, and the system held 4.75 million gallons in tanks, including a 750,000 gallon elevated tank finished at the Stargate site in August 2020. Upper Trinity's water, the report says, is Lewisville Lake and Chapman Lake water from the district's regional plant. The federal facility list fills in the hardware behind those addresses: the FM 407 pump station carries a 500,000 gallon elevated tank, the Stonewood station on East Jeter Road a 300,000 gallon ground tank and two 650 gallon-a-minute well pumps, and the Stargate station a 750,000 gallon elevated tank beside the Stargate well, with its compliance sampling point at 1250 I.T. Neely Road.

Nothing in the report measures hardness. Its tables cover chloramine (1.68 ppm on average, 0.5 to 3.0), barium, chromium, fluoride (0.248 to 0.499 ppm), nitrate, nickel, lead, copper and two coliform findings; there is no secondary constituents table, no sodium, no calcium. That leaves the water's two sources to describe in general terms. The Texas Water Development Board says Trinity Group water, which includes the Paluxy sand the corporation names, is fresh but very hard where the aquifer outcrops and takes on dissolved solids with depth, and the deep Trinity and Woodbine wells of the Mustang district to the north show how far that goes, testing below 6 ppm hard while carrying 222 ppm of sodium. Where Cross Timbers' four wells fall between those two pictures is not published. The lake half is treated reservoir water; Upper Trinity's 2025 report carries no hardness line for it, and Dallas, whose plants also take Lewisville and Ray Roberts water, reports between 120 and 155 mg/L.

So a Double Oak tap can be on well water, on lake water or on both, in a ratio that moves with the season, and the corporation's own summer figures show the wells carrying the larger share when demand peaks. Well water from these sands may be hard or soft depending on the well; lake water is the moderately hard to hard kind that scales a water heater. The report's Double Oak sampling site tells you the corporation tests in your neighborhood for disinfection by-products; it does not tell you your hardness. We have no figure for Double Oak and do not borrow Lantana's, Dallas's or Mustang's. The free water test measures total hardness at your kitchen tap in grains per gallon and ppm, and that reading, taken in the hard part of the year if you can, is the one to size a softener to. The corporation's history page puts its territory at about 20 square miles of south central Denton County, reaching into parts of Highland Village and Flower Mound, and its second sampling site sits on Shiloh Road across the Flower Mound line, where the 2025 trihalomethane reading was zero against 14 ppb in Double Oak.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Double Oak, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Double Oak.

Is Double Oak’s water hard?

No published figure says. Cross Timbers WSC's 2025 report, which samples at 500 Cross Timbers Road in Double Oak, prints no hardness, calcium or sodium at all, and the supply is a seasonal mix of four wells and Upper Trinity lake water. Groundwater from these sands can be hard or soft depending on the well, and the lake water is hard; a free water test gives your own number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
