No hardness figure on file for Duncanville yet.

Duncanville's only source is treated surface water from Dallas, whose 2023 memorandum gives a range for its system; Duncanville's report prints no hardness figure that we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Duncanville, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

DUNCANVILLE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Dallas water, re-pumped from Duncanville's own stations and tanks

Duncanville's 2025 report lists exactly one source line, surface water from the City of Dallas, and it says the supply has held the TCEQ's Superior rating. The report names the seven Dallas sources and leaves it there, so the plant side of the story comes from Dallas. In a December 2023 memorandum, Dallas Water Utilities explained that its Sunnyvale plant, East Side, handles lakes Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork, and that the other two plants, Elm Fork and Bachman, are fed by Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine through the Elm Fork of the Trinity. Dallas's water quality information page adds three facts a Duncanville homeowner can use: lime and iron sulfate are used in treatment to remove suspended solids and for corrosion control, no groundwater is used anywhere in the Dallas system even though the city sits above an aquifer, and the finished water is non-corrosive.

Hardness in that water is Dallas's to report, and Dallas has. The same memorandum says yes, Dallas has hard water, and puts the system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate. Divided by 17.1, the low end of Dallas's range is about 7 grains per gallon and the high end about 9; on the USGS scale, where 121 to 180 mg/L is hard, all of the Dallas range past its 120 floor lands in the hard band. Duncanville's report prints Dallas's results for nitrate, barium, fluoride, aluminum and manganese, with aluminum and manganese flagged as secondary standards, but no hardness result, so this page gives Duncanville no figure of its own. Nothing between a Dallas plant and a Duncanville meter adds or strips calcium and magnesium; pumping and storage change pressure and water age, not mineral content.

The pumping is Duncanville's own, and there is a fair amount of it. A filing the city made with the Public Utility Commission of Texas, listing the utility sites it needs kept powered, describes the North Main Pump Station at 1110 North Main Street with three distribution pumps, a 5,000,000-gallon ground storage reservoir and a 500,000-gallon elevated tank; the Danieldale Pump Station at 218 East Danieldale Road with four pumps and ground reservoirs of 2,500,000 and 2,000,000 gallons; and the Summit Pump Station at 1839 Straus Road in Cedar Hill, where three pumps draw from an 8,000,000-gallon ground reservoir that Duncanville shares with Cedar Hill. Two more elevated tanks, 1,500,000 gallons on South Clark Road and 1,000,000 gallons on Meadow Crest Lane, and two pressure plane valves, one on East Highway 67 and one on South Main Street, finish the list. Which tank your street hangs off decides your pressure; the water in all of them is the same Dallas blend. Size a softener to 9 grains, where the Dallas range tops out, and use the free water test for the exact reading at your tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Duncanville, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Duncanville.

Is Duncanville’s water hard?

Duncanville's water is all Dallas water, and Dallas's 2023 memorandum puts the Dallas system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7 to 9 grains per gallon, which the USGS scale calls moderately hard at the floor and hard above 120. Duncanville's own 2025 report prints no hardness figure we could read; the free water test gives the number at your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
