Euless.
150 ppm. That is 8.8 grains per gallon.

The Euless water quality report lists a total hardness of 150 ppm as its highest result. On the USGS hardness scale that is hard water. Euless' 150 ppm is the result for the city's own wells; the Trinity River Authority lake water that is the city's primary supply tested 110 ppm in the same report.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 8.8 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 8.8 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Euless sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 8.8 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

EULESS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

City wells at 150 ppm beside Trinity River Authority lake water at 110

The Trinity River Authority's Tarrant County treatment plant sits on Trinity Boulevard at the line between Fort Worth and Euless, with a Euless address, and the city's water page traces the water that reaches it: pumped from Cedar Creek Reservoir and Richland Chambers Reservoir in East Texas into Lake Arlington, then to the plant, then out to Euless, Bedford, Colleyville, Grapevine and North Richland Hills. The page calls that the primary source and names the secondary: city wells in the Trinity Aquifer. The 2025 water quality report says the same, surface water from the authority and groundwater from Euless wells, and the city's capital budget shows the wells are working assets, with pump and motor work on the Far North Well and repairs to the Fuller Well recorded in its project history. Fort Worth's 2017 planning documents list the authority's project only as an emergency connection, so Euless water is authority water and well water, not Fort Worth's.

Euless' report does something its neighbors' reports do not: it prints two columns of secondary constituents, one for the authority's water and one for the city wells, and the two are different waters. The wells column shows 150 ppm of total hardness as calcium carbonate on March 19, 2024, calcium 117 ppm, magnesium 0.753 ppm, sodium 329.3 ppm, total alkalinity 426.4 ppm, chloride 121 ppm, sulfate 177 ppm, total dissolved solids 880 ppm and conductivity 1550 micromhos. The authority column, sampled February 27, 2025, gives hardness 110 ppm, calcium 38.0 ppm, magnesium 3.68 ppm, sodium 27.5 ppm, alkalinity 81 ppm and total dissolved solids 194 ppm. The 150 ppm figure on this page is the wells' result, the highest level the report shows. On the USGS scale 150 is hard, close to 8.8 grains per gallon, and 110 is moderately hard, close to 6.4. The well water also carries about 12 times the sodium and 4.5 times the dissolved solids of the lake water, which is the usual mark of deep Trinity groundwater; the surprise in Euless is that its hardness tested higher than the lake's, not lower.

Which water reaches a Euless tap depends on whether the wells are running and where they tie into the mains, which the report does not map, so a home can see lake water most of the year and a stiffer well blend in the weeks the city leans on groundwater. The sensible reading of the two columns is a range from 110 to 150 ppm with the top end real, not theoretical, because it is the city's own measured result. A softener sized to 150 ppm, which is 8.8 grains or so, handles both columns, and a metered valve will regenerate less in the months the lake water dominates. The free water test tells you which column your tap is drinking on the day, and that is the figure we size to.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Euless, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Euless.

Is Euless’ water hard?

Yes, and more so from the wells. Euless' 2025 report prints 150 ppm total hardness for the city's own well water, hard on the USGS scale at about 8.8 grains per gallon, beside 110 ppm for the Trinity River Authority lake water that is the primary supply. Which one your tap carries changes with the season, and the free water test tells you.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
