COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Farmers Branch, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

FARMERS BRANCH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Dallas-treated lake water in a city-owned network, no printed figure

Farmers Branch's water quality report draws a clean line between two owners. The arrangement of taps, pump stations, storage and pipe that serves the city's homes belongs to the City of Farmers Branch; the water in it is treated by the City of Dallas, bought under an agreement, and the city's report says so in as many words. The artesian well the town drilled after it incorporated in 1946 belongs to its past; the 2024 report describes every result in its tables as water purchased from Dallas Water Utilities, and that 2024 edition is the one quoted in this section; the city's water quality reporting page also carries a 2025 edition as an online flipbook. Dallas's plants are sorted by source in the city's December 2023 memorandum: Elm Fork and Bachman treat Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine water that arrives down the Elm Fork of the Trinity, and East Side treats Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork water. The Farmers Branch report does not say which plant's water enters its mains.

The switch from a well to a lake is the whole hardness story, even without a local number. Deep well water and treated reservoir water tend to sit at different ends of the scale, and Farmers Branch is now entirely on the reservoir end. Its own report prints no hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium or alkalinity row, so the page carries no number for the city. The supplier's figure is Dallas's: 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate in the 2023 memorandum, a span of 7 to 9 grains per gallon that the USGS scale rates hard at every point past 120 and moderately hard at the floor. It describes the Dallas system as a whole rather than a Farmers Branch tap. What the Farmers Branch tables do show is the water aging in the city's own pipes: total chlorine residual in the city averaged 2.41 ppm in a range of 0.5 to 4.0 against Dallas's 2.97 in a range of 2.77 to 3.10, and the city's highest trihalomethane and haloacetic acid averages were 18 and 17 ppb. The city's water loss audit for 2024 put losses at 5.48 percent of the water it took in.

At a Farmers Branch faucet, then, expect Dallas lake water with Dallas's minerals, because pumping and storage change pressure and chlorine, not calcium. A home on the north side of the city and one on the south are on the same purchased supply, and the hardness at either moves with Dallas's lake blend and the season, not with the address. Until the city prints its own figure, 9 grains per gallon, the top of what Dallas reports, is the sizing assumption for a softener here, and the free water test is what turns that assumption into a Farmers Branch number at your tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Farmers Branch, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Farmers Branch.

Is Farmers Branch’s water hard?

Farmers Branch's report carries no hardness row, so this page shows no figure for the city. The water is Dallas-treated lake water, and Dallas's December 2023 memorandum rates the Dallas system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, which is 7 to 9 grains per gallon and hard water past 120 on the USGS scale. The free water test measures your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
