COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Farmersville, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

FARMERSVILLE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Lavon and Texoma water from the Wylie plant, moderately hard by the district's account

Farmersville's 2024 water quality report states the city's supply plainly: purchased surface water from the North Texas Municipal Water District's Wylie treatment plant, drawn from Lavon Lake in Collin County and Lake Texoma in Grayson County. The Texoma half of that pairing has a history of its own. The district obtained its water rights permit for Lake Texoma in 1986 and began building a 72-inch Texoma pipeline in 1990, but zebra mussels found in the lake in 2009 cost the district 28 percent of its supply until a pipeline carrying Texoma water directly to the Wylie plant was completed in 2014. The district now describes Wylie as treating a blend of the two lakes and as the largest plant of its kind in Texas. Lavon's side of the system also includes the East Fork Reuse Project, in operation since 2008 and built around 1,840 acres of man-made wetlands.

Hardness comes from the lakes themselves. The district's water-quality guidance says its treated water is considered moderately hard, mostly because of the minerals in Lavon Lake, and that those minerals are harmless but leave lime scale on fixtures. Farmersville's own report reprints the Wylie plant's regulated results for 2024, from disinfection by-products through fluoride, nitrate and turbidity, but it does not include the secondary table where hardness, sodium and total dissolved solids would appear, so we have no figure for the city. The district's 2025 data sheet for the Wylie plant, posted online by the City of Terrell, another district customer, gives the supplier's own picture: total hardness between 96.0 and 200 ppm as calcium carbonate, calcium from 31.2 to 61.3 ppm, magnesium 6.27 to 9.44, sodium 41.9 to 88.0, total alkalinity 43.6 to 138 and total dissolved solids from 182 to 455 ppm. Those are plant figures, not Farmersville measurements. Using the district's own conversion of dividing by 17.12, the plant's figures run from about 5.6 to about 11.7 grains per gallon, moderately hard at the low end and very hard at the high end.

What reaches a Farmersville tap is Wylie water, so its mineral content follows the district's blend rather than anything the city does locally. The Lavon-to-Texoma ratio shifts with lake levels and demand, and so does the share of calcium and magnesium in the finished water; that is why the Wylie range is so wide and why the same house can see more scale in one season than another. The chlorine residual the city's report tracks in its lines is a disinfectant and has no bearing on hardness. Because the city prints no figure, the honest number for your address is the one measured at your kitchen sink: our free water test reads it on the day, and we size a softener to the top of what it shows rather than to a regional average.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Farmersville, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Farmersville.

Is Farmersville’s water hard?

Farmersville's own report carries no hardness result, so this page states none. The city's water is the North Texas Municipal Water District's Wylie plant water, which the district calls moderately hard; the district's 2025 Wylie data runs 96.0 to 200 ppm, moderately hard to very hard. A free water test measures what your own tap carries.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
