COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Glenn Heights, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

GLENN HEIGHTS’ WATER, BY HARDNESS

One Dallas supply on both sides of the county line, moderately hard to hard

The Dallas County and Ellis County halves of Glenn Heights drink the same water. The city's 2025 water quality report says the only source used in 2025 was surface water purchased from the City of Dallas, system TX0570004, and nearly every row of its results table is labeled Dallas: fluoride at 0.627 ppm, barium at 0.037 ppm, total organic carbon at 3.05 ppm with a range of 2.21 to 4.05, total chlorine at 2.97 ppm, and a highest turbidity reading of 0.16 NTU. Dallas's own December 2023 memorandum, written for a council committee, explains where that water was made: the East Side plant in Sunnyvale treats lakes Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork, and the Elm Fork and Bachman plants treat Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine water carried down the Elm Fork of the Trinity. Dallas's water quality page says the system uses no groundwater at all and names lime and iron sulfate among its treatment chemicals.

The hardness of that water is the hardness Dallas reports for itself. The figure in Dallas's 2023 memorandum for the Dallas system is 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, or about 7 to 9 grains per gallon once divided by 17.1, and all but the very bottom of that range falls in the USGS hard class, 121 to 180 mg/L; 120 itself is the last moderately hard value. Glenn Heights' report has no hardness line. The only taste-and-appearance constituents it prints are two metals from the Dallas 2025 data, aluminum (5 ppb, ranging 0 to 8) and manganese (2.27 ppb, ranging 0 to 6.80), and both sit under their secondary limits. Dallas's 2025 report diagrams its treatment as source, blend, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and storage; softening is not among the steps shown, so the calcium and magnesium the lakes carry are still in the water when it reaches Glenn Heights. With no city-level figure in the report, this page claims none for Glenn Heights.

What is Glenn Heights' own is the pipe network, and the report says a little about it. In the water loss audit filed with the Texas Water Development Board for 2025, the city reported an Infrastructure Leak Index of 2.72; Dallas's own 2025 report puts the Dallas system at 6.6 on the same index. Glenn Heights filed its initial service line inventory in October 2024 and lists no known lead service lines, and the report invites residents to the council's first and third Tuesday meetings on South Hampton Road to weigh in on water decisions. Those are facts about pipes and process, and pipes do not change hardness: a house on the Ellis County side and a house on the Dallas County side get the same Dallas blend at the same mineral content, with pressure the only thing that varies by neighborhood. Size a softener for 9 grains, the top of the Dallas range, and have the free water test confirm the reading at your own tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Glenn Heights, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Glenn Heights.

Is Glenn Heights’ water hard?

Both halves of Glenn Heights drink Dallas water, and Dallas's 2023 memorandum puts the Dallas system at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7 to 9 grains per gallon, which is hard on the USGS scale except at its very bottom. Glenn Heights' 2025 report prints no hardness figure we could read, so the free water test gives the number at your tap.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
