108 to 150 ppm. That is 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon.
The Haltom City water quality report gives hardness as a range, 108 to 150 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon, these show up across Haltom City; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 6.3 to 8.8 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
HALTOM CITY’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Fort Worth lake water at every tap, 108 to 150 ppm, moderately hard to hard
Everything in Haltom City's mains arrives already treated. Fort Worth's 2017 water service area study puts the share of Haltom City it serves at 100 percent, and the city's 2025 water quality report labels its treatment plant results as Fort Worth data, because Haltom City runs no plant of its own. What the city does run is the pipe and the pressure: 305 miles of distribution mains, 1,662 fire hydrants and the pumping and storage facilities behind them, according to its 2023 budget. The 2022 budget records new access controls at the North Oaks Pump Station and a Superior rating for its public water system in the state's compliance investigation. The report's source-water section describes Fort Worth's seven sources and notes that the Tarrant Regional Water District, which sells Fort Worth its raw water, received the state's source water assessments. The report adds a detail about the supply chain: Fort Worth's Holly plant was offline in January 2023, so a round of required testing shifted to January 2024, a reminder that more than one Fort Worth plant stands behind a wholesale customer. The federal facility inventory shows where that water lands once it crosses the city line: two wholesale connections, then two pump sites. The North McLean Road site holds four 1.5 million gallon ground tanks and four pumps rated 4,500, 3,600, 2,200 and 2,200 gallons a minute; the Higgins site holds two more 1.5 million gallon ground tanks and three pumps of 1,760, 1,760 and 2,300. Elevated storage is a 0.75 million gallon tank on Wall Avenue and a 2.0 million gallon tank at 820 and Haltom Road. The 2022 budget supplement puts average daily consumption at 3.741 million gallons across 13,173 connections, and the report's water audit records a real loss of 70,290,970 gallons, 5 percent, for 2025.
Because the water is Fort Worth's, the chemistry is Fort Worth's too, and Haltom City's report reproduces the supplier's secondary constituents table in full. Total hardness reads 108 to 150 ppm as calcium carbonate, printed beside the same span in grains, 6 to 9 for every gallon. Calcium, 37.6 ppm at its lowest and 48.1 at its highest, and magnesium, 3.45 at its lowest and 7.35 at its highest, are the two minerals that hardness measures; bicarbonate of 99.7 to 120 ppm and sulfate of 17.3 to 40.9 ppm are the salts they travel with; dissolved solids of 182 to 244 ppm and conductivity of 312 to 431 micromhos per centimeter round out a lake supply with a moderate mineral load, and pH held between 7.8 and 8.5. The report's own note on secondary constituents is that they bear on how the water looks and tastes rather than on health. The low end of the range, 108, falls in the moderately hard class on the USGS scale; the top, 150, is hard.
Haltom City has no second source in the report, so a tap at one end of the city and a tap at the other carry the same Fort Worth water, differing only by which Fort Worth plant was feeding the delivery meters that week and by the season's mix of West Fork and East Texas lake water. The range in the table is the honest description: some months nearer 108, some nearer 150, and the city's storage smooths the pressure swings without changing the minerals. A softener sized for the hard end, 8.8 grains or so, covers the hard months without running short, and a metered valve regenerates less often when the blend eases. Our free water test reads your tap on the day, and that reading is the number worth sizing to.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Haltom City, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Haltom City.
Is Haltom City’s water hard?
Yes. Haltom City's water is Fort Worth's, and the city's 2025 report prints Fort Worth's total hardness of 108 to 150 ppm, or 6 to 9 grains per gallon. That runs from moderately hard to hard on the USGS scale, enough to spot glassware and scale a water heater, and the free water test gives the figure at your own tap.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
