HOW HARD IS HEATH’S WATER?

200 ppm. That is 11.7 grains per gallon.
The City of Heath water quality report lists a total hardness of 200 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 96 to 200 ppm (5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 11.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At about 11.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Heath sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 11.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
HEATH’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Lake water bought through Rockwall, 200 ppm at its highest
Heath's water changes hands twice before it reaches a faucet. The city's 2025 Consumer Confidence Report traces the chain: Rockwall sells Heath treated surface water, Rockwall itself is supplied by the North Texas Municipal Water District, and the district draws on Lake Lavon in Collin County. The city's public works page is explicit that Heath is not a direct customer of the district, and the district's own list files Heath under indirect customers, systems that receive its water through another utility. The chain runs on past Heath, too: Forney Lake Water Supply Corporation's 2025 report lists an emergency interconnection with the City of Heath beside its regular district supply. One consequence of buying through Rockwall shows up in Heath's own monitoring: its disinfection byproduct samples are drawn at two addresses, 404 Las Lomas in Rockwall and 6 Brighton Court in Heath, because the two systems carry the same water. Each spring, the public works page notes, the district switches its disinfectant for about a month, and Heath's system changes with it. The federal facility record shows where Rockwall's water lands once it is Heath's: a 3 million gallon ground tank at 1485 South T L Townsend Drive with three service pumps rated 6,000, 6,000 and 4,000 gallons a minute, a 1.5 million gallon elevated tank at 2430 North FM 740 and a 0.5 million gallon elevated tank at City Hall, serving 4,610 connections and 10,464 people. That record also marks Heath as a wholesaler, its standing as the emergency supplier to Forney Lake.
The figure for Heath is 200 ppm, the highest total hardness as calcium carbonate recorded in 2025, printed on page 15 of the report in a table that runs 96.0 to 200 ppm across the year. The numbers are the district's Wylie Water Treatment Plants data, which the report reproduces under that heading, because neither Heath nor Rockwall treats the water. At 200 ppm the water is very hard on the USGS scale, and the district's guidance of dividing by 17.12 puts it at about 11.7 grains per gallon; the 96.0 ppm low end is moderately hard, about 5.6 grains. Calcium in the same data ran 31.2 to 61.3 ppm against magnesium of only 6.27 to 9.44 ppm, so most of what registers as hardness in Heath is calcium. Alongside hardness the table lists total alkalinity as calcium carbonate at 43.6 to 138 ppm, which the report attributes to naturally occurring soluble mineral salts, and a pH of 7.3 to 8.8, the measure the report uses for corrosivity. Heath's own 2025 sampling at household taps found lead at a 90th percentile of 0.99 ppb and copper at 0.967 ppm, both under their action levels, while the chloramine residual in the mains averaged 1.48 mg/L.
Lakeside addresses in Heath get no different water from the rest of the city. Lake Ray Hubbard is a Dallas reservoir, and nothing in it reaches a Heath tap; what does reach the tap is Rockwall's share of the Wylie plant's output, so Heath's hardness tracks Rockwall's and swings with the district's lake blend through the year. Because the supply is a consecutive connection, the report prints Rockwall's system number, TX1990001, as Heath's source, and the two cities' results move together. A softener in Heath should be sized for the year's peak, 200 ppm or roughly 12 grains per gallon, with a metered valve to take advantage of the months when the water runs closer to 96. The free water test tells you which end of that range your house is seeing now.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Heath, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Heath.
Is Heath’s water hard?
Yes. Heath's 2025 report prints total hardness at 200 ppm as the highest result, in a range of 96.0 to 200 ppm, which is very hard at the top of the USGS scale and about 11.7 grains per gallon. The water is district Wylie plant water bought through Rockwall, so every Heath home sees the same range.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
