1.04 to 110 ppm. That is 0.1 to 6.4 grains per gallon.
The Highland Village annual water quality report gives hardness as a range, 1.04 to 110 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans soft to moderately hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. Highland Village's 1.04 to 110 ppm range spans water from the city's own wells and from Upper Trinity's lake plant; the city's report does not say which source produced which end.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What 0.1 to 6.4 grains per gallon looks like at home.
At 0.1 to 6.4 grains per gallon, these show up across Highland Village; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 0.1 to 6.4 grains of dried mineral per gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
HIGHLAND VILLAGE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Five city wells plus Upper Trinity lake water, from 1.04 to 110 ppm in one report
Highland Village is one of the few cities in southern Denton County that still pumps its own groundwater. The federal facility record lists five city wells, Lake Vista, Oak Street, Highway 407, Highland Shores and Southwood, each paired with a small treatment plant and pump station and with ground storage of 0.3 to 2.0 million gallons, plus two connections for surface water from Upper Trinity's regional plant and two 0.75 million gallon elevated tanks, on Idlewild Court and Nelson Parkway. The city's 2025 report says the water comes from the Trinity Aquifer and Lewisville Lake, calls the groundwater self-supplied and the lake water purchased, and notes that staff adjust the system continually as demand and season change. Upper Trinity's Taylor plant in Lewisville treats the lake water with ozone and chloramine, and the city disinfects its own well water with chloramine as well.
The hardness figure is a range for a reason. In a chart the report says it added because residents ask about appliance requirements, taste and hardness, the city prints 2025 total hardness as calcium carbonate at 1.04 to 110 ppm, with calcium at 1.89 to 37.5 ppm, magnesium at 0.0438 to 3.93 ppm, total dissolved solids (a 2023 result) at 400 to 798 ppm and pH (a 2024 result) at 7.9 to 8.6. On the USGS scale 1.04 is soft, close to zero, under a tenth of a grain per gallon, and 110 is moderately hard, about 6.4 grains. The chart does not label which source produced which end. Two things in the public record are consistent with the spread without settling it: deep Trinity Group wells in the Mustang district to the north test under 6 ppm of hardness with 222 ppm of sodium, and Dallas gives 120 to 155 mg/L for the Lewisville and Ray Roberts water it treats itself. The Texas Water Development Board adds that Trinity groundwater is very hard in its outcrop and gains dissolved solids with depth, so even the well end of the range is a matter of which well and how deep.
For a homeowner the range is the point. A tap fed mostly from the Southwood or Highland Shores well on a given day and a tap running Upper Trinity water can land at either end of the same table, and the city's own report says the mix is adjusted with demand and season. A single softener setting cannot be right for 1 ppm and for 110 ppm at once, and 110 is the figure to plan around: a unit sized for the top of the range runs lightly on soft days and still protects the water heater on hard ones. The free water test reads your tap on the day, in ppm and in grains, and tells you where in the city's range your house actually sits.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Highland Village, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Highland Village.
Is Highland Village’s water hard?
Sometimes. Highland Village's 2025 report prints total hardness from 1.04 to 110 ppm: the low end is soft and the high end moderately hard, about 6.4 grains per gallon. The city blends five wells with Upper Trinity lake water and does not say which end is which, so a free water test is the way to learn your own house's number.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
