Hurst.
108 to 150 ppm. That is 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon.

The Hurst water quality report gives hardness as a range, 108 to 150 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. Hurst's 108 to 150 ppm is Fort Worth's published range for the lake water that makes up nearly all of the city's supply; the city's seasonal wells have no published hardness figure.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon, these show up across Hurst; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 6.3 to 8.8 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

HURST’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Fort Worth lake water with seasonal city wells, 108 to 150 ppm

Hurst is a Fort Worth customer that keeps its own storage and its own wells close at hand. The city's Water Division page lists 205 miles of water lines, 1,236 fire hydrants, 4,633 valves, 12,100 meters and 16,461 connections, served from 10 ground storage tanks holding 8.3 million gallons and 3 elevated tanks holding 2.75 million gallons, with three of the city's wells in full seasonal operation and the rest held for emergencies. The 2023 budget fills in the proportions: of 1.98 billion gallons used in fiscal 2021 to 2022, about 1 million gallons came from the wells, with the rest bought from Fort Worth, and six high service pump stations able to move 33.048 million gallons a day distribute it against a Fort Worth estimate of an 8.20 million gallon maximum day. The 2017 Fort Worth service area study credits Fort Worth with 95 percent of Hurst, the wells accounting for the remainder. The state continues to rate the system Superior. The federal facility inventory shows how the wells and tanks pair up: each of the six pump stations, at 116 and 1233 Hurstview Drive, 108 West Pipeline Road, 836 Cheryl Lane, 2400 Norwood Drive and 436 Melbourne Road, has ground storage and a well of its own, with Norwood the largest at 2.000, 1.500 and 0.562 million gallon tanks and pumps of 4,000, 3,000, 1,500 and 1,200 gallons a minute. Elevated tanks of 1.0 million gallons stand at North Precinct and Valentine and 0.750 million at Precinct Line. The same inventory lists emergency interconnects with Colleyville and with the authority's Tarrant County project. In fiscal 2020 the wells ran nine days and supplied 10 million of 1.82 billion gallons.

Hurst's water quality report reprints Fort Worth's results, so the figures here are the supplier's, read from Fort Worth's own 2025 report. Fort Worth's secondary constituents table gives total hardness as calcium carbonate of 108 to 150 ppm, or, in grains, 6 to 9, and that range is the figure on Hurst's page. Behind it, in ppm, calcium runs 37.6 to 48.1 and magnesium only 3.45 to 7.35; bicarbonate 99.7 to 120 and total alkalinity 99.7 to 124; then dissolved solids 182 to 244 and sodium 19.5 to 27.9, with pH 7.8 to 8.5. On the USGS scale 108 is moderately hard and 150 is hard. Hurst adds no treatment of its own, so nothing between the wholesale meter and the tap changes those numbers. The wells are a different water, groundwater rather than lake water, but their contribution in a normal year is a small share of what the city uses, and we found no published hardness result for them.

In most months a Hurst tap carries Fort Worth lake water and nothing else, bought at the wholesale meters, held in the city's ten ground tanks and three elevated tanks and lifted by six pump stations, so the hardness at the kitchen sink follows Fort Worth's blend and season across the 108 to 150 range rather than anything Hurst does to the water. In peak summer the three seasonal wells add groundwater to the mains, and the blend near a running well can differ from the published range in a direction the city does not print. That is the one Hurst-specific reason to measure rather than assume. Size a softener to the 150 ppm end, the 8.8 grain mark, and the free water test puts a number on your own kitchen tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Hurst, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Hurst.

Is Hurst’s water hard?

Yes. Nearly all of Hurst's water is Fort Worth water, and Fort Worth's 2025 table puts total hardness at 108 to 150 ppm, 6 to 9 grains per gallon, moderately hard to hard on the USGS scale. Hurst's own wells run in summer and have no published hardness figure, so the free water test is the way to know what your tap carries.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
