Josephine.
No hardness figure on file for Josephine yet.

Josephine buys treated Lavon Lake water from the North Texas Municipal Water District's Wylie plant, which the district calls moderately hard, but the city's own report prints no hardness figure we could read.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for Josephine, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

JOSEPHINE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Wylie plant water the district calls moderately hard, with no city figure

The North Texas Municipal Water District lists the City of Josephine among the 34 customer cities and utilities it supplies directly, and the city's 2024 water quality report says the same in its own words: Josephine purchases water from North Texas MWD Wylie WTP, which provides purchased surface water. The district knows the town for another reason. In a presentation to the Josephine City Council on February 12, 2024, it explained that it bought 410 acres north of the city in 2011 as a site for a monofill, a landfill for a single by-product, in this case the residuals of treating Lavon Lake water at the Wylie plant. Those residuals are the sediment the Wylie plant settles out of lake water during treatment; today it collects in lagoons at the plant, is dried, and is trucked off for land application as an iron-rich soil enhancer. The district applied for the monofill permit in May 2021 and expects design to begin in 2028. The same slides rate the four Wylie plants at 840 million gallons a day together and the district's treatment capacity at 946.

What that treatment removes is what settles. What it leaves is dissolved, and the district's water quality page is direct about it: the treated water is considered moderately hard, Lavon Lake's minerals being the reason, calcium bicarbonate at the head of its list and magnesium carbonate behind it, and homeowners can convert any total hardness result from mg/L to grains per gallon by dividing by 17.12. Josephine's own report gives nothing to divide. Its 2024 Consumer Confidence Report is the state's template with the blanks left in; it carries the city's lead and copper, disinfection by-product and nitrate results, but the secondary constituents page that would hold hardness, sodium, alkalinity and dissolved solids is simply absent, so no Josephine figure could be read from it. We show no hardness figure for the city.

The neighbors supply the scale, and the numbers are theirs, not Josephine's: Garland's 2025 report and Bear Creek Special Utility District's, both fed by the Wylie plant, show 2025 total hardness between 96.0 and 200 ppm, which converts to about 5.6 and 11.7 grains per gallon, the moderately hard and very hard classes. Josephine draws on that plant too, through a distribution system the city runs itself, so a household here can expect the dried spots on glassware and the lime in a water heater that the district describes, at a strength no document has yet put a number to for the city. A free water test at a Josephine faucet is the only way to get that number, in ppm and in grains, and the softener is then sized to the top of what the test shows across the year.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Josephine, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Josephine.

Is Josephine’s water hard?

The district that supplies Josephine calls its treated water moderately hard because of the minerals in Lavon Lake, and neighbors on the same Wylie plant print 96.0 to 200 ppm in their own 2025 reports, a figure that is theirs, not Josephine's. Josephine's own 2024 report prints no hardness figure we could read, so only a free water test at your own tap gives Josephine a number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
