HOW HARD IS KRUGERVILLE’S WATER?

4.773 ppm. That is 0.3 grains per gallon.
The Mustang SUD 2025 water quality report lists an average total hardness of 4.773 ppm, with a reported range of 3.68 to 5.48 ppm (0.2 to 0.3 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is soft water. Krugerville's 4.773 ppm is Mustang's result for its own wells; the district also delivers Upper Trinity lake water, for which the report prints no hardness figure.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What hard water looks like at home.
At about 0.3 grains per gallon, Krugerville’s figure is soft water, so these signs point to a harder share of the supply or to the day’s blend rather than to the figure. Three or more of them, and the free water test says what is at your tap.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of each gallon of harder water.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
KRUGERVILLE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
Mustang well water pumped along U.S. 377, soft at under 6 ppm, lake share unprinted
Krugerville sits on the well side of Mustang Special Utility District. The federal facility record for the district (TX0610036) lists a chlorination plant, Plant 2, on U.S. 377 in Krugerville, a compliance sampling point at 5066 Highway 377 in Krugerville, and a string of wells running north of town beside U.S. 377 and FM 2931: one 1,500 feet north of Ike Byrom Road at U.S. 377, one south of Joe Allen Road at FM 2931, two near Foutch Road, and the district's Plant 10 at its office at 7985 FM 2931 in Aubrey. A dozen wells are listed as active in all; an older Well 9 at Baseline Road and Corolota Road in Krugerville is marked inactive. The 2025 report says the wells draw on the Trinity and Woodbine aquifers, which the district taps in three counties, and that the district also brings in lake water, treated by Upper Trinity, from Lewisville Lake and Jim Chapman Lake. The federal record describes Plant 2 itself as a small site, two 100 gallon-a-minute pumps and two 30,000 gallon ground tanks, with the district's heavy storage nearby rather than in town: a 1 million gallon elevated tank at FM 2931 and Ike Byrom Road, and a 575,000 gallon ground tank with two 1,792 gallon-a-minute pumps at the FM 2931 station.
The figure on this page, 4.773 ppm of total hardness as calcium carbonate, comes from page 10 of that report, where the district prints secondary constituents for its own groundwater: a 2025 low of 3.68 and high of 5.48 ppm, calcium 1.22, magnesium 0.420. On the USGS scale anything under 60 is soft, and 4.773 ppm works out to about 0.28 grains per gallon, a level at which a softener has almost nothing to remove. The rest of the table explains the number. Sodium is 222 ppm, total alkalinity 530 ppm, total dissolved solids 734 ppm, pH 8.8. The Texas Water Development Board describes Trinity groundwater as very hard but fresh in its outcrop belt, with dissolved solids climbing as wells go deeper downdip; the Mustang wells are the deep kind, rich in dissolved mineral but carrying it as sodium salts rather than as calcium and magnesium. The report prints no hardness result for the Upper Trinity water the district also delivers, and none for the mix in the mains. One other line in Mustang's tables marks the difference between its two waters: fluoride, which the district's own groundwater carried at 1.43 ppm in an April 2025 sample while the Upper Trinity water tested at 0.26 ppm, and the wholesaler adds none.
What arrives at a Krugerville tap depends on how much of the day's supply is coming from the wells around FM 2931 and U.S. 377 and how much is lake water pumped in from the Upper Trinity side of the system, and the 4.773 ppm result describes only the first of those. Lake water runs harder: Dallas, which treats the same lake water at the Bachman and Elm Fork plants, gives 120 to 155 mg/L for its own system. So a Krugerville home can run a dishwasher spot-free for months on well water and then see film on the glassware in a hot August when more lake water is moving. The well figure is the floor of the range, not the ceiling. Size a softener to what the free water test finds at your own kitchen tap, and if the reading comes back under a grain, the honest advice is that the wells are doing the softening for you.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Krugerville, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Krugerville.
Is Krugerville’s water hard?
Not when the wells are supplying it. Mustang SUD's 2025 report lists its groundwater at 4.773 ppm total hardness (3.68 to 5.48); that is soft, roughly 0.3 grains per gallon. The district also pipes in Upper Trinity lake water and prints no figure for it, so a free water test shows which water Krugerville is getting on the day.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
