HOW HARD IS KRUM’S WATER?

No hardness figure on file for Krum yet.
Krum pumps its own Trinity Aquifer wells and buys treated lake water from the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, and no hardness figure appears in its water quality report.
COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER
What each grain per gallon looks like at home.
With no figure for Krum, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.
Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.
The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.
Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.
The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.
Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.
Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.
KRUM’S WATER, BY HARDNESS
City wells in a declining aquifer plus Upper Trinity lake water, no figure published
The ground under Krum is the reason the city has two kinds of water. The Trinity Aquifer, which the city's wells tap, is not one layer but a stack of sands, limestones, clays and gravels that the Texas Water Development Board lists under several names, Paluxy, Twin Mountains, Travis Peak, Glen Rose, Antlers, Hensell and Hosston, spread across 61 counties. In North Texas its fresh water is about 600 feet thick. The same agency records some of the largest water level declines in the state along the Interstate 35 corridor from McLennan County north to Grayson County, 350 feet to more than 1,000 feet, mostly from municipal pumping, and says those declines have slowed over the past decade as communities leaned on surface water instead. Krum's 2024 water quality report shows that shift in miniature: the city's own Trinity wells, plus treated surface water from Upper Trinity's regional plant, which the report credits to Lewisville and Chapman lakes.
The two sources pull in opposite directions on hardness, and the report gives no number for either or for the blend. It carries a paragraph on secondary constituents explaining that calcium, sodium and iron affect taste and appearance and are not required to be reported, and it does not report them. The board's description of the Trinity says its water is fresh but very hard where the aquifer is exposed at the surface, and that dissolved solids climb as the formations go deeper. Neighboring systems show what deep Denton County wells actually deliver. Argyle Water Supply Corporation, which also mixes Trinity wells with Upper Trinity water, printed sodium at 120 mg/L against hardness of 76.8 for 2025. Mustang Special Utility District's Trinity and Woodbine wells printed 222 ppm of sodium, 530 ppm of alkalinity and 4.773 ppm of hardness, water so soft a softener would have little to remove. Lake water sits at the other end: Fort Worth's 2025 range for its reservoir water, printed in Northlake's report, was 108 to 150 ppm.
Which of those Krum's tap resembles on a given day depends on how hard the wells are pumping against how much lake water the city is taking, and that changes with season, demand and the pressure zone a street sits in. A house drinking mostly well water may see little scale and a slightly slick feel in the shower; the same house in a month when purchased water carries more of the load may see spotting on glass and a crust in the kettle. Those are not two towns, they are one town with two sources, and the city has published no figure that settles where the blend lands. We do not guess. The free water test reads the grains at your own tap on the day it is taken; that reading sizes the softener, and it is the only honest number for Krum.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.
One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.
Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.
When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.
Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Krum, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.
A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.
HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The hard water FAQ for Krum.
Is Krum’s water hard?
Nobody has printed the number. Krum's wells draw from the Trinity Aquifer, whose deep water in Denton County tends to run soft and high in sodium, and the city also buys Upper Trinity lake water, which runs moderately hard to hard. The city's report carries no hardness figure and the blend shifts with season, so the free water test is how you get Krum's answer.
Is hard water safe to drink?
Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.
Does a softener make my water salty?
No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.
THE SOURCE MATTERS
Where the number comes from.
Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
