Lowry Crossing.
200 ppm. That is 11.7 grains per gallon.

The Milligan Water Supply Corporation 2025 water quality report lists a total hardness of 200 ppm as its highest result, with a reported range of 96 to 200 ppm (5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon). On the USGS hardness scale that is moderately hard to very hard water.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 11.7 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At about 11.7 grains per gallon, every one of these shows up in Lowry Crossing sooner or later. The water test tells you how soon.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: about 11.7 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

LOWRY CROSSING’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Milligan's Wylie plant water, 96 to 200 ppm across the year

Milligan Water Supply Corporation's 2025 water quality report devotes four of its pages to a single document, the North Texas Municipal Water District's Wylie Water Treatment Plants data for 2025, reprinted in full, because the Wylie plants are the one source Milligan has. The report's own source listing is a single line, surface water from the district, with its state source water assessment completed. The raw water is Lavon Lake, which the state water board records as a 20,622-acre Collin County lake on the Trinity's East Fork holding 412,598 acre-feet at conservation pool, its pools raised in a modification finished in December 1975. Milligan's own part of the story is the pipe: its distribution results show chloramines averaging 2.7 ppm across 2025, from 1.7 to 3.7, nitrate at 0.243 ppm, lead at a 90th percentile of 0.861 ppb and copper at 0.599 ppm at residents' taps. The federal SDWIS facility list for Milligan, system TX0430041, shows how compact the operation is: one pump station on Bridgefarmer Road with three service pumps rated 420 gallons per minute, ground storage there of 0.42, 0.060 and 0.040 million gallons, a 0.300 million gallon elevated tank at 3586 County Road 406, and one consecutive connection to the district's system TX0430044, with Lake Lavon named on the NTMWD meter record and 3,364 people served. The corporation's report adds that it has completed and filed its lead service line inventory, available by phone or on its website. Everything about minerals comes from the district's pages.

That district table is where the page's figure comes from: total hardness as CaCO3 of 200 ppm at its highest in 2025, with a range of 96.0 to 200, a span that starts in the moderately hard class and ends in the very hard class, or 5.6 grains per gallon at the bottom and 11.7 at the top. The table lists every mineral behind that figure. Calcium ran 31.2 to 61.3 ppm; magnesium 6.27 to 9.44; alkalinity as CaCO3 43.6 to 138; dissolved solids 182 to 455; sodium 41.9 to 88.0; sulfate 84.7 to 147; chloride 29.0 to 92.5, all in ppm, with pH between 7.3 and 8.8. Iron and aluminum were below detection, manganese sat at 0.002 ppm and zinc at 0.016. The table's own note on hardness is that it comes from naturally occurring calcium. The district's label for this water is moderately hard, a legacy of Lavon Lake's minerals, and it puts the conversion at 17.12 mg/L per grain.

For a Lowry Crossing household the arithmetic is unusually clean. There is no well in Milligan's system and no second plant, so the water at the tap is Wylie water, and hardness moves only with the district's lake blend and the season: nearer 96 ppm in the softer stretch of the year, nearer 200 in the harder. A house at one end of Milligan's lines and a house at the other see the same water in the same week. The report's calcium range, nearly doubling from low to high, is the swing a water heater feels between those seasons. Size a softener for the range's 200 end, about 12 grains per gallon, and choose a metered valve so it regenerates less when the lake runs light; the free water test tells you where the lake sits on the day it is drawn, at your own tap.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Lowry Crossing, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Lowry Crossing.

Is Lowry Crossing’s water hard?

Yes. Milligan Water Supply Corporation, which serves Lowry Crossing, prints the district's Wylie plant total hardness for 2025 at 200 ppm, on a range of 96.0 to 200, moderately hard to very hard, about 5.6 to 11.7 grains per gallon. All of Milligan's water is that lake water, so the figure moves with the season, not the street.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
