COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What each grain per gallon looks like at home.

With no figure for New Hope, the signs are the measure. Three or more of these, and the free water test will put a number on it.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: the minerals that dry out of every gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

NEW HOPE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

North Collin SUD lake water from the Wylie plant, no published figure

North Collin Special Utility District's 2025 water quality report lists three sources for the water it delivers to New Hope and the rest of its territory: a surface water connection from the North Texas Municipal Water District, recorded as a connection from the district's system TX0430044, and two groundwater sources, one at 4365 FM 75 and one at 200 Crystal Creek Lane, both tagged Altoga WSC in the listing. The report classifies the district as purchased surface water and says the two wells supply the Altoga area. The lake water comes from Lavon, which the Texas Water Development Board records as a Corps of Engineers reservoir in Collin County, impounding the East Fork of the Trinity across 20,622 acres and holding 412,598 acre-feet, enlarged in a modification finished in December 1975. The North Texas district's treatment, described on its own pages, runs the raw water through ferric sulfate coagulation, settling, ozone, dual-media filtration and chloramine before it enters the pipes that reach New Hope.

The report does not print a hardness, sodium, alkalinity or dissolved solids result for either source, so this page shows no figure for New Hope. The well results it does print have the look of groundwater: fluoride at 1.41 ppm on a range of 1.14 to 1.41 from a January 2024 sample, barium at 0.0042 ppm, nitrate at 0.362 ppm. The lake water is described by its supplier. The North Texas Municipal Water District calls the treated water it sells moderately hard and lays that at the door of Lavon Lake's minerals, naming lime, iron, magnesium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate, and it gives 17.12 as the divisor that turns a report's mg/L into grains per gallon. Other systems that buy the same Wylie plant water and print its numbers, Milligan Water Supply Corporation, which serves Lowry Crossing, for one, print 96.0 to 200 ppm of total hardness for 2025, with magnesium in the 6.27 to 9.44 ppm band, calcium in the 31.2 to 61.3 ppm band and dissolved solids between 182 and 455 ppm. Those are the district's figures as other utilities print them, not North Collin's.

For a New Hope home the practical reading is this: unless the address is in the Altoga pocket the two wells serve, the tap carries district lake water, and its hardness tracks the district's seasonal blend, moderately hard in the lightest months and very hard in the heaviest, by the numbers its neighbors print. North Collin's own distribution results show a 2025 chlorine residual averaging 2.03 ppm in a range of 0.5 to 3.5, and a 13 percent water loss for 2024; neither bears on hardness. We will not put a number on New Hope's water that its own utility has not printed. The free water test puts a number on your own faucet; until then, a softener matched to the top of the supplier's range, about 12 grains per gallon, is sized for the lake water on its hardest day.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for New Hope, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for New Hope.

Is New Hope’s water hard?

No figure is published for New Hope. North Collin Special Utility District's 2025 report prints no hardness, sodium or dissolved solids result for the district lake water it buys or for its two Altoga wells. The supplier calls the lake water moderately hard, and systems beside it print 96.0 to 200 ppm for the same Wylie plant water. The free water test gives your tap's number.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
