Northlake.
108 to 150 ppm. That is 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon.

The Town of Northlake Water Quality Report 2025 gives hardness as a range, 108 to 150 ppm, and prints no average, so we show the range rather than a number it never published. On the USGS hardness scale that spans moderately hard to hard water. Where your home falls in that range depends on the day and the season; a free water test tells you the number at your tap. The 108 to 150 ppm range is Fort Worth's, printed for the south side of town; the Upper Trinity water serving the northern subdivisions carries no printed hardness figure.

COMMON SIGNS OF HARD WATER

What 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon looks like at home.

At 6.3 to 8.8 grains per gallon, these show up across Northlake; the high end of the range brings them faster. The water test tells you where your home sits.

01
Spots on glasses and dishes

Cloudy glassware and white spots the dishwasher cannot rinse off: 6.3 to 8.8 grains of dried mineral per gallon.

02
Scale on faucets and showerheads

The white crust is limescale. It narrows spray holes and seizes aerators and valves.

03
Soap that will not lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap before it foams: more soap, and scum on tubs and shower doors.

04
Dry skin and hair

The same soap curd settles on skin and hair and does not rinse away.

05
Stiff laundry

Minerals bind to fabric and detergent. Towels come out stiff, whites go grey, colors fade sooner.

06
Water heater and appliance scale

Scale coats heating elements and clogs small valves, so appliances work harder and fail sooner.

NORTHLAKE’S WATER, BY HARDNESS

Fort Worth lake water at 108 to 150 ppm on the south side, Upper Trinity on the north

Northlake's 2025 water quality report is really three reports bound together: a results table for the town's own distribution system, one for the Upper Trinity Regional Water District and one for the City of Fort Worth. That reflects the plumbing. Fort Worth's treated water feeds the south portion of town. Fort Worth's own water quality page lists seven sources, among them Lake Bridgeport and Benbrook Lake alongside the better known Trinity River lakes, and says the city runs five drinking water treatment plants. The northern subdivisions take Upper Trinity water drawn from Lewisville Lake and treated at the district's Thomas E. Taylor plant in Lewisville, where ozone, carbon and sand filtration and chloramine finish the water. The town, Fort Worth and Upper Trinity all disinfect with chloramine, so the disinfectant is the same whichever side of town you live on; the minerals are not necessarily the same.

The hardness numbers in the report belong to Fort Worth. Its secondary constituents table prints total hardness as calcium carbonate at 108 to 150 ppm for 2025 and restates it as 6 to 9 grains per gallon. Behind that range sit calcium at 37.6 to 48.1 ppm, magnesium at 3.45 to 7.35, total alkalinity at 99.7 to 124, sodium at 19.5 to 27.9 and total dissolved solids at 182 to 244. On the USGS scale the low end is moderately hard and the high end is hard, and Fort Worth's own water quality page says its water is usually hard enough to leave a mineral coating inside metal pipes and fixtures. The Upper Trinity table in the same Northlake report lists barium, fluoride, nitrate, turbidity, bromate and disinfection by-products but no hardness, calcium or magnesium line, and the district's own 2025 report prints none either. Northlake's own distribution table covers lead and copper, coliform and disinfectant residual for the whole town, and it, too, carries no mineral figures of its own.

So the figure on this page describes the south side of Northlake. A home in a northern subdivision drinks Lewisville Lake water, which is reservoir water like Fort Worth's and carries the same kind of minerals, but no utility has printed its hardness and we will not borrow Fort Worth's number for it. Within the Fort Worth zone, the 108 to 150 spread is a year's range across that city's plants, so a single tap can sit anywhere in it depending on the season and which plant is supplying the line that week. Size a softener to 9 grains if you are on the Fort Worth side. If you are on the north side, or are not sure which side your street is on, the free water test settles it with a reading from your own faucet.

HOW A SOFTENER WORKS

Ion exchange, salt and regeneration.

One tank of resin, one tank of salt, and a valve that runs the cycle.

01
Ion exchange

Resin beads hold sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium swap onto the beads as water passes, and the water leaves at close to zero grains.

02
Salt and regeneration

When the beads fill up, brine from the salt tank rinses the hardness to the drain and reloads the sodium, metered by the gallons you use.

03
What it removes, and what it does not

Calcium, magnesium and a little dissolved iron. Not chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, lead or taste: that is a filter’s job, so see whole house water filtration for Northlake, and a reverse osmosis tap or bottled water delivery for drinking water.

04
The salt-free alternative

A salt-free water conditioner turns hardness into crystals that stay in the water instead of on heaters and pipes: no salt, no drain, less scale, no relief for soap and skin.

HARDNESS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

The hard water FAQ for Northlake.

Is Northlake’s water hard?

Partly. The south side of Northlake gets Fort Worth water, which the 2025 figures put at 108 to 150 ppm, or 6 to 9 grains per gallon: moderately hard to hard, enough to scale heaters and spot glass. The northern subdivisions get Upper Trinity lake water with no printed hardness figure, so your own number comes from the free water test.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, minerals with no federal drinking-water limit. It is a plumbing, appliance, soap and skin problem, not a health one.

Does a softener make my water salty?

No. The salt goes down the drain at regeneration; the water carries a little sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, which a reverse osmosis tap removes again.

THE SOURCE MATTERS

Where the number comes from.

Each figure is read from the document linked beside it, in its own units and period. A missing result stays missing; a range stays a range.
